MEGAERA MAELSTROM
The Untamed Princess
"There is no honor in blind judgement."
Regardless, there would be no encounters with these fairytale dragons while she lived under the chalcedony pillars of the Starfall Isles. Long ago, when the kingdom was but a fledgling town, the king, who was her father, had summoned a barrier of intense arcane magic to surround their home, and no dragon could enter without his knowledge. Here, they were protected from the evils beyond the Isles. Due to her father's safeguard, the clan had thrived for many years in peace. Only once has his vigilance failed, but Megaera was not yet alive to witness it. According to her clanmates' recollections, a feathered dragon by the name of Fretus had come to the clan seeking food and rest. With her eyes veiled in the color of the night, her father saw no reason to turn her away, and soon she had earned a place by his side. Unaware of the stigma around her kind, Fretus never intentionally tried to hide her element and she genuinely loved Megaera's father, but upon discovery of her true colors, she was driven from the clan and never heard from again. As Megaera grew older, she gained a growing interest in the red-eyed dragons, though after hearing about her step-mother's exile, she deemed it wise to keep her interest private. She began to admire the tenacity of these beings and built a fascination for their culture. The art of combat appealed to her in particular, and since taking the warrior's path was seen as an honorable profession in every land of Sorneith, she could train without fear of losing her parents' love and protection. Before long, Megaera could brandish a sword with frightening confidence and her exponential improvement over time awarded her a rank of nobility in the clan. One early evening, while performing her routinely patrol of the barrier's edge, a nearby rustling caught Megaera's attention. Claws on her sword's hilt, she pushed aside the branches and tread through the brush to investigate, but what her eyes met upon reaching the clearing on the other side stopped her in her tracks. Illuminated by the soft, solemn glow of starwood blossoms, a female dragon clad in silken robe and cowl with scales the colors of rose quartz and starlight sat among the lucky stars with her face pointed towards the sky. She seemed to be in the act of star-gazing. No dragon that Megaera had ever seen before radiated with such a serene aura, but her duty required that she uncover the stranger's identity and motives, and so she begrudgingly shook herself from entrancement and called out to her. With a voice as gentle as falling petals, she revealed her name to be Nia, and that her passion lies in studying the stars of Sorneith. She was more than happy to share her knowledge with Megaera, and before they knew it, they had chatted the night away from discussing the lore of various constellations and getting to know each other. However, when Megaera mentioned the tales of red-eyed dragons from her childhood, silence fell from Nia. Slowly, she pulled back her cowl. Her eyes had been hidden up until this moment; now they shone freely in the moonlight, deep and crimson. Out of instinct, Megaera gasped and took a step back. She had never given much merit to those stories, but she found herself doubting her beliefs now that she was faced with a living incarnation. Uncertainty filled Megaera; what should have been a foul evil creature turned out to be a kind and sweet dragon, nothing like what her parents had described to her. They were wrong, she realized, to scorn and shun them, and Megaera believed Nia would be the dragon to prove it to them. Nia, having felt a sense of unwelcome from Megaera's response, began to leave the clearing, but before she could stray far, Megaera called WIP |
