Biography

This desperate necromancer has ventured far from his home lair (Volrin, #261879), on a journey to find a way to revive his deceased Charge. If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to his home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!

History:

Fortune is a life-long traveler who, when he was just a hatchling stumbling through the daunting world of Sornieth, befriended an adult Imperial named Chance. The colossal dragon became a valuable mentor for Fortune, helping to guide the monotone Guardian along on his adventure and teaching him all he'd need to know to survive in the world. Fortune finally departed from his precious friend as an adolescent, having learned everything Chance had to teach him; however, it wasn't long before the pieces started to click together in his brain and he realized Chance was none other than his Charge. He turned right around and returned to the Imperial's clan, and after weeks of begging and pleading, finally convinced Chance to accompany him on his travels.

The two dragons spent their whole lives travelling together; Chance could go anywhere he wanted with Fortune by his side, knowing that the burly Guardian would fiercely protect him at all costs. He often joked about how he could walk straight through a nest of harpies and come out without a scratch on him, and honestly, he probably wasn't far from the truth. Fortune had grown into a mighty Guardian, and was able to put up a fight against any threat to his Charge, from Beastclans to even the fiercest of feral dragons. However, there was still one ever-present danger that Fortune couldn't protect Chance from, no matter how hard he fought...

Decades had passed since Chance and Fortune had began their travels together, and the effects of aging were beginning to wear down at the now-elderly Imperial. The fur and feathers across his body had lost all of their cyan coloration, having faded into a silvery gray. His soft green eyes were sunken and framed by bushy gray eyebrows, and he had sprouted a scraggly, thick, silver beard. His joints ached, and they popped loudly whenever he stretched; his wings in particular were too stiff and weary to take him any considerable distance anymore. Fortune limped Chance along for as far as he could go, and settled him down in an accommodating Light flight when he was too tired and weak to walk any further.

Fortune was close by Chance's side when the last of his energy finally failed him, and gently held the elder's claws in his own as he passed away.

"What is a Guardian to do when their Charge grows old and weary? When their life isn't taken from them, but rather, is lost to the passage of time? I did everything I could for Chance: shielded him with my scales, fought for him with my claws and fangs, embraced him in my arms. I didn't do anything wrong as his guardian, so why did I still lose him?"

Fortune spent many months after that in horrible pain, pining away without his Charge, his reason to live. In a desperate attempt to get Chance back, Fortune returned to the sickly flight that had seen his birth and fostered him as an infant: Plague. In the coming years, he would study every book and scroll on reviving the dead that he could get his claws on, and once he had completed his training, Fortune embraced decay and became a fearsome necromancer. He sacrificed everything he had for the powers to bring his Charge back, from his powerful muscles that were atrophied by the disease boiling in his veins, to his face that was consumed by rot and disfigured into a gnarled, fleshy mess. Vile flowers, ranging from red carnations to deep crimson poppies, sprouted up through his scales and spread their spindly roots all through his body; supposedly, they symbolized the aching his heart still held for Chance and his memories of the deceased Imperial.

Finally ready to raise his dead Charge, Fortune returned to the Light flight where Chance had been buried. His grave, resting peacefully in the bright sun of the Mirrorlight Promenade, soon began to stir in response to the Guardian's fervent desire to see the Imperial again; one claw burst up from the dry, flaky soil, and then the other ripped free from the earth, both of them bearing a fleshy pink tone totally unlike the robin blue scales Fortune was expecting. Slavering, bony jaws were next to pull free from the grave, nothing like the soft and friendly face they had used to be. Soon the ghoul had completely unearthed itself from its resting place, covered in voracious maws, atrophied scraps of flesh, and rashes of ruby eyes that peered out, wide and anxious, at the bright world above the soil.

Though Fortune was surprised and discouraged by the monstrous, ghoulish appearance of the Imperial he had raised from the earth, he remained hopeful that Chance's spirit had remained intact despite his physical condition; that hope was quickly diminished, however, as all of Fortune's attempts at conversation were met with nothing but the gurgle of blood and phlegm in the back of Chance's throat. His eyes were unfocused and dull, carrying none of the warmth that Fortune had once found comfort in. He couldn't speak, his kindly demeanor was gone... tears pricked at the Guardian's eyes as he realized that the Charge he had sacrificed his life for was truly gone. This ghoul, this shattered remnant of the dragon he had once loved and protected, was not Chance.

With no other options, Fortune and his undead companion began their travels once again, as he still refused to give up on his beloved Charge... his Charge that now believed itself to be nothing but an undead minion for the necromancer. The Guardian dearly hopes to find a way to restore the mind and soul of his Charge, and would happily travel to the ends of the earth for a cure.
