There is a group of dragons, the stuff of legend, that is said to take contracts for almost any sort of dirty work one can imagine. Espionage, assassination, the Night Court does it all. They are based in no one territory, have no one motivation, and have no secret signal to know each other by. The most skilled of this Court are the six Highnesses. Crescendo is one of these elite courtiers - the Golden Prince.

Crescendo was born into royalty. Not Night Court royalty – Majesties are, after all, not allowed to take mates or have children – but normal royalty, ruling over a small kingdom within the Ashfall Wastes.

He was the second to hatch in his two-egg clutch, and therefore, not the heir to the throne. His sister Marion poked through her egg first and became the Crown Princess. But Marion had no interest in ruling. While Crescendo diligently studied things fit for a prince such as archery, swordsmanship, diplomacy, and the various arts of leadership, Marion ditched and skipped her lessons where she could. She preferred to spend most of her time in the city itself, assisting shopkeepers and flirting with girl and boy dragons alike. This might have been acceptable behavior for Crescendo as the younger prince, but for the Crown Princess, it was nearly unthinkable. But what was any dragon to do about it? Marion was a force unto herself, and even now, Crescendo vividly remembers the knock-down-drag-out shouting matches she would have with the King and Queen about her habits.

Things might have continued on like this indefinitely if disaster hadn't struck. One night, a fire began in the poorer section of the capital city. Crescendo wasn't too worried at first – fires in Fire territory do happen, and are usually easily put out by dragons drawing energy from the flames – but this one wouldn't be contained. In fact, it grew and spread, consuming all in its path with a fury of magic only possible by someone who'd been trained in Fire all their life. Someone like the Crown Princess.

By the time Crescendo made the connection, however, the flames were roaring at the castle walls, eating away at the solid stone. Crescendo was forced to back off and hide, willing the flames to protect and shield him from his sister's sudden wrath. The last thing he remembered was the fire bending over him to create a fierce dome of orange, before his Spiral narcolepsy took hold and everything faded to black.

But when he woke, it was in a completely different city. Crescendo opened his eyes to death and ashes. The castle he'd grown up in, the city he'd loved so much, had been burnt to the ground. His father was alive, but badly burned, having had only Lightning to protect himself. His mother was dead, and his sister was nowhere to be seen. Crescendo looked over the razed city he'd once hoped and sworn to protect, and felt only one thing – rage. He wanted revenge for the dragons that Marion had killed, for his mother, for his throne. And he remembered a ritual he'd learned about in a book, years ago, that could help him with that goal.

Crescendo created a contract with the Night Court. He drew the circle of runes in ash on what was left of the palace floor. He cut his wing and let his own blood drip into the runes, he gathered the bone of a deceased dragon and the poisoned arrow and the black tulip crown. And when that was done, he stood back and chanted the mantra until a courtier appeared. Crescendo offered this assassin the last of his family's wealth and, when that wasn't enough, his own life in service of the Court.

Marion, that traitorous Crown Princess, was dead within a week, and Crescendo had a new life away from all the trappings of royalty. It took some getting used to, but Crescendo grew to love the new freedoms he hadn't gotten to enjoy as a diligent prince. For the first time in his life, he decided on his own life, what sorts of jobs he took, and even mundane things such as which dragons he associated with and what he wanted to eat. It was almost enough to make Crescendo forget the pain of seeing his city turn to ashes.

His newfound freedom motivated him. Crescendo became a skilled killer, thief, and spy, finding ways to combat his Spiral narcolepsy and to kill silently from a distance. The hunting he'd done as a prince helped him with the killing, and a long habit of sneaking around while his parents and Marion were arguing served him well in sneaking into other clans' lairs. He quickly became quite good at all sorts of jobs, except those which required quick fingers or close combat.

But that is enough for the Court. Crescendo's name came up when the Majesties were searching for a new Highness. Eager to be a prince again, Crescendo accepted the new title and moved up in the Court's ranks. For his love of fine things and the golden fletching of his arrows, he became known to all the Highnesses as the Golden Prince.

Crescendo has been in the Court for the longest time, except for Ekaros. He's remained a Highness despite multiple opportunities to become a Majesty, claiming that he's quite happy where he is and that he prefers running missions to being cooped up in the Shaded Palace. However, he takes on a leadership role among the other Highnesses effortlessly. Whenever an argument breaks out, or a disagreement threatens to split the skilled assassins, it will always be Crescendo with the voice of reason and the stern golden eyes, welding them back into a team with his calm, wise intelligence.
