Onyx
There is a group of dragons, the stuff of legend, that is said to take contracts for almost any sort of dirty work one can imagine. Espionage, assassination, the Night Court does it all. They are based in no one territory, have no one motivation, and have no secret signal to know each other by. The only ones who know the identities of all the courtiers at any given time are the four Majesties, who live in the Shaded Palace, hidden from any danger. Ekaros' job is to serve the Majesties as their Royal Guard.

He was created, not born, out of magic and stone. Even now he won't give the name of the Majesty who created him, or the year in which he was born. He's old enough for his onyx skin to be chipping away and revealing the colorful crystal underneath. He's also old enough to remember almost every single Majesty. The memories of the Majesties who have passed away are contained in his pearl of stone, which he guards just as fiercely as any true Pearlcatcher would.

This pearl he carries also has another unique and vital feature. When a dragon not connected to the Night Court wishes to create a contract, there's a very specific ritual that has to be performed. When the ritual is completed, a courtier will appear to carry out the details of the contract and collect payment. Ekaros' pearl is the way the Majesties know about performances of this ritual. The surface of the pearl will turn cloudy and blue runes will scroll across it, giving Ekaros the details of the contract which he then relays to the Majesties. They then assign one of the courtiers to complete it, and Ekaros fades into the background again, waiting for another ritual to be performed.

But while he waits, there is always something for him to do around the Shaded Palace. Ekaros maintains the wards which hide the Palace's entrance and turn away any intruders, cleans the grand rooms and tunnels which would otherwise get dusty from disuse, and organizes items which are displaced by the Majesties. If the King of Plots leaves his scrying bowl somewhere, Ekaros will replace it in his chambers. If the Queen of Poisons has to leave her lab halfway through picking the leaves of a deathbell plant, Ekaros will quietly sweep up the mess and deposit the leaves in one of her many labeled jars. He's quite used to being silent and on the edges, doing his best to make the Majesties' lives easier.

This is not to say he doesn't like praise. Being appreciated for his efforts is all the sweeter to him simply because it doesn't happen often. He doesn't care about callous treatment from the Majesties – it's ingrained into his psyche that he's inherently lower than them, and it's his duty to serve – but when he's thanked for something, or a Majesty takes the time to converse with him without the aim of dragging information out, Ekaros' step becomes lighter and the crystals peeking through his onyx skin shimmer more brightly than normal. He doesn't need praise to survive, but it certainly makes his shadowy existence happier.

Sometimes when Ekaros has a quiet moment, of which there aren't many, his mind will turn to the past. He'll shut himself in one of the unused rooms and run his claws over his pearl, remembering all the Majesties he's served and all the contracts he's relayed. In the rare cases where he has more than a moment, he'll slip down to the palace's kitchen and bake. The cookies and cakes he makes are always left for the Majesties to eat – as a creature of magic and stone, he has no need for food – and he expects no thanks or reward for this extra work. He lives to serve the Majesties in any way that he can.

And as such, he's no more than a background figure, a shade haunting the Shaded Palace, whose existence is even less known than that of the Majesties.
