JIVALAX
The Shadowshivan

_____The story of Jivalax begins years if not decades before he was even born. He is the second to bear that name, and unlike his spiritual father, he is an ally of sorts to the dragon known as Vapentaraxevictus.

_____Before the current Stronghold, before Pentarax even arrived on Sornieth, there was an older, far greater Pyreshivan Stronghold that spread across an entire mountain range, and its five elders waged a great war against the Shadowshivan Empire and their master, the elder-dragon Jivalax.

_____This elder Jivalax controlled armies of dragons, leading them towards his vision of dominion not merely over one world, but a vast multitude of planetary systems. Gifted with the ability to move himself and others across dimensions in the blink of an eye, it was a goal that seemed within reach after mere years.

_____In time however, his wrath began to cloud that vision, and he focused on Pentarax, whose ability to teleport across worlds matched his own. Jivalax saw him as the last and most formidable obstacle to his goals.

_____For decades, Pentarax and soon his family as well, were hunted by the elder-dragon, fighting his forces when they could, and fleeing when they had to. Though Pentarax could match him in power, the other possessed a total disregard for innocent life, and would use it to his advantage in battle, to gruesome and horrific extremes.

_____Eventually, Pentarax capitalized on both the obsession and the disregard for surroundings. He managed to lead the Shadowshivan astray; bringing him to expanses that bordered the edge of known reality, where life was not inclined to obey common rules of existence.

_____In their last fight, Jivalax unleashed a destructive wave of shadow magic that ravaged what turned out to be a sentient landscape. Pentarax escaped, though not before breaking one of his enemy's horns and casting a spell that trapped some of the shadow magic within it. Even then, he was beginning to devise an experiment...

_____Of course, finding a suitable subject for the experiment was another matter entirely. Pentarax had used his soul-grafting methods before, but this was different. Before, he'd been transplanting the minds and souls of friends; this time, he was attempting to graft the power and to some extent, the mind of an enemy to a body without necessarily replicating their hatred.

_____It was another few months before an opportunity presented itself; Pentarax had initially hoped to perchance infuse a recently deceased hatchling and raise it, but recently deceased hatchlings were a rarity.

_____Eventually, Pentarax was called to the site of a recent battle by Skaril, and there the two found a Guardian that had apparently been the general of a now-defeated army. Mortally wounded, the dragon accepted Pentarax's proposal; a chance to "survive" and fight on in exchange for his service within the Stronghold.

_____With the spell being performed while the subject was alive albeit not for long, Pentarax hoped that some remnant of the Guardian's honor and instinct to protect might sway the new Jivalax and make him far less prone to causing wanton destruction.

_____Crafted from the spilled essence of the Shadowbinder herself, Burzmu is a crafty goblin who serves whichever dragon can catch it in a game of hide-and-seek in the Tangled Wood. Jivalax won its service by leveling a vast swath of the forest and nearly crushing the mocking creature.

_____The spell has worked...to a degree. While this new Jivalax is certainly not Pentarax's enemy, he is nonetheless the cruelest dragon within the lair. He takes delight less in his own victory than he does in the defeat of his foes; preferring frequently to leave an enemy alive but crippled beyond hope of recovery.

_____Where most shadow-aligned dragons utilize the darkness for trickery and deceit, Jivalax prefers to use it as a means of intimidation and instilling terror in others. More than one or two dragons have remarked quietly among themselves that he seems more Shade than shadow. Still, as long as he does not turn on anyone within the Pyreshivan Stronghold, Pentarax allows the massive Guardian considerable flexibility with his methods.

_____One final note of interest however, is that not even the concept of a Search and a Charge have left the dragon. Jivalax left the Stronghold for a time, driven by the same instinct as every Guardian. Feelings among several within the lair were a mixture of relief at his departure and curiosity at what the violent dragon could possibly find that he might consider worth protecting and devoting his life to.

_____Several months later, Jivalax returned with a mate...
