Biography
Krakatoa's eruption in 1883 is one of the deadliest in modern history, with around 36,000 estimated to have been killed by the heat blast, island sinking into the ocean, tsunamis and other effects of the explosive eruption. The blast was so loud that it could be heard from Australia, 2,800 miles away. This soundwave likely traveled across the entire planet three or four times, with a "volume"* of 220 decibels. The eleven cubic miles of ash released into the atmosphere created exceptionally brilliant sunsets for years to come, along with global cooling of about 1.2 degrees Celsius for the following year. The temperatures remained lower for five years until 1888 when they rebounded to normal levels. Massive pumice rafts, ten feet thick in some areas, clogged ports and interrupted trade. When the eruption finished, most of the island had sunk below the waves. Today there's a new volcano growing in the former caldera. It's been named Anak Krakatau, or the son of Krakatau.
The explosive eruption is equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT. By comparison, the largest bomb ever tested, the Tsar Bomba, was only 50 megatons of TNT.
