The ground rumbled angrily beneath him, seemingly in protest to the atrocity of it all. The mountainous structure jutted skyward, serving as both shelter and monument to the evil it contained.

The old dragon's tattered blue-black hide echoed the night around him, heavily scarred legs bearing evidence to a lifetime of massive chains. Chains which held him captive at the gateway of damnation- from the day of his hatching to serve as an unwilling guard- his ears, heart and very soul perpetually assaulted by the horrors within.

Lightening pierced the sky as the ground shook violently. The roar of the landscape eliciting another from deep within his core. With defiant resolve he thrust himself forward and ripped the chains free- weather-worn wings lifting his mass above the ice for the first time in his life.

Near the entrance of the cursed mound he settled himself and there, at the edge of darkness, he took his charge. The horror invading his land would be halted. To this he vowed.
