In the Crosswinds Clan, hatchlings are well cared for, beloved by all. They have safe nests to sleep in, and warm families to guide them. They are showered with love from the moment they hatch, and even when they are seen off to other clans or to the service of the gods, they remain utterly beloved by all.

It is that lasting, joyful love that protects them so well, though the clan has not yet noticed, even when all the hatchlings tell the same stories. It is the love that brought Jellybean to life.

She was just a large stuffed animal for the hatchlings to play with and find comfort in, a toy to bring happiness. But in an environment steeped in so much love, she began to soak in all of the magic, not to mention the infectious delight of the hatchlings, and with time, she came to life.

Her existence is a limited one still, she admits. None of the Crosswinds adults know that she is a living being even though the hatchlings repeatedly tell stories about her as their protector. They assume her liveliness is just a story invented by imaginative hatchlings, kept alive for an extraordinarily long time. But she is alive. She is real. And she would give anything for the hatchlings under her watch. She guards them from harm big and small, from natural disasters to scraped knees. She tells them stories when they can't sleep, and holds them close when the thunder roars. So long as they love her, she will always be there to keep them safe.

And if they ever stop loving her, she will still love them all with as much fierceness as before.
