Empetrum is the head alchemist of the clan. He believes that alchemy is somewhere between a science and an art that is dependent on the whims of the gods. He is generally a dour dragon who gets tired of being compared to his late father.

He was named after his father, a warrior who died defending his clansmates during the incursion that occurred after Centaurea's treachery. Empetrum Jr. never met Empetrum Sr., so all he has to go on are the words of his others. He has heard time and again about his indomitable father, about how his laughter shook the cavern walls, and how other dragons sought him out for his insight. He's also heard that hatchlings innately trusted his father, and occasionally he was called on to calm those that are orphaned and scared... particularly ironic, because he was not able to be there for his youngest son.

Empetrum is the crowberry genus, small shrubs that live on moorlands, in tundra or in spruce forests.
