Biography

KUROHA
Clan leader

Kuroha had had a rather… interesting companion for most of her life, and it very rarely made itself known. It was something from out of a hatchling’s tale, the tales elder dragons spun to warn hatchlings away from strangers. The Shade. It had crept deep into Kuroha’s young soul as a hatchling, sparring with and overtaking her consciousness, making her sour and cold. She tried to make it up to her clutchmates, bringing them food and toys, but they rejected everything she brought them and didn’t even let her return to the cave she was hatched in.

So she left, the Shade hovering on her shoulder like a devil. She paced around her old home for several days, hoping that someone, anyone from her old family would understand and help her. That hope left her quickly, and she traversed the bubbling landscape of the Ashland Waste for almost a week before reaching the Shifting Expanse. She was immediately greeted by thunder and lightning, the crackling and booming feeling… heartwarming. She ventured further into the rumbling, humid landscape, and didn’t stop till she reached the Carrion Canyon, where naturally-formed caves lay in the earth.

For several weeks, she was… alone. As she grew, she’d learnt to deal with that devil on her shoulder, learning to push it aside instead of allowing it to take over. With growth returned her empathy, and she soon began allowing other dragons join her new clan, inviting them in with harsh words. Growing up with a parasite led her to act… rough, uncaring. She did have emotions, though, she just… couldn’t express them. She grew up without other dragons, so she wasn’t sure how to act around them without seeming rude or aloof. It put off most others, and several rejected her offers of clanship, turning up their noses to the young Skydancer. She honestly wasn’t too bothered by this--hey, more room for her--but she was… lonely.

As time passed, the Shade… separated itself from her personality completely, forming a lump in her consciousness, a tumor on her personality. She would lose time, coming back to find herself before a cowering dragon, obviously having scared them half to death, or having attacked them, wounding them.

This was clearly an issue. How could she do this and not remember? Unless, of course, it was the Shade.

And it was.

It once introduced itself to one of her clanmates, sweeping itself into a bow, seeming… too cold. Too malicious. It had an extremely intimidating aura about it, lurching and sweeping over the other dragon in waves, sapping the courage from them immediately and replacing it with pure dread. It hovered over the dragon, ten times bigger than Kuroha though it didn’t change the body’s form. It sneered, the expression making the other dragon quake and whimper in fear. “I am not of Shadow, nor Lightning. I’m not even of this land’s origin, Arcane. I am something darker than that, one of those that came here hundreds of years ago. I am the Shade,” it said, almost pompously, baring its teeth in a snarky, dangerous grin. The dragon cowering before it didn’t deny it, either, terrified at seeing Kuroha’s eyes clouded with onyx smoke.

That dragon had ran away from Kuroha’s clan before she had a chance to even understand what had happened, abandoning their belongings and just running.

After that first encounter, the Shade seemed to settle down in Kuroha’s skull, lounging around in her mind like a parasitic cat. It would rise occasionally, watching from behind her as she went about daily tasks, soaking in the information and adapting. It was smart, snatching at her mannerisms and accent, absorbing everything that was thrown at it.

But Kuroha was no fool, either. She sensed it watching her, observing her. She started to learn how to cope with it living inside her, beginning to have short conversations with it, both out loud and in their headspace.

“What do I call you?” she asked it, silently, her body resting in a rocky outcropping near her clan.

The reply took several moments, as if the creature hadn’t expected to be spoken to. “The Shade. I thought you were intelligent enough to pick that up,” it said with a small rumble, as if laughing at her.

“That isn’t a name. What do I call you?” she repeated, irritated.

No answer came from the creature; it seemed to be considering.

“You may refer to me as Bezaleel.”

And with that, it fell silent once more.
