SoftGoshen ”It's okay to be a glowstick. Sometimes we have to break before we shine." However, this was not so for a Snapper born in Dragonhome. Known as Soft Goshen, this Snapper was placid and timid compared to his bulkier, hardier clanmates. Instead of excavating mines and building up his physical strength, Goshen preferred staring lucidly up at the sky, watching the clouds drift past on a clear day, or gazing at the stars as they sparkle in the night. Goshen would've been content with being left to his skygazing forever, but due to Dragonhome's lack of proper labor forces, Goshen was pressured by his clan to start life in the mines, sixty below the earth and miles away from his beloved sky. Being forced to work in the mines was bad enough, and Goshen had no love for the coal he had to unearth. What made it worse was that due to the time he spent idling away at the sky, Goshen didn't have the physical strength needed to cart away the heavy rocks, nor did he have the ability to dig up large chunks of earth. In fact, he was banned from using a pickaxe because on his first try, he swung himself off-balance and took down several mines. Goshen probably would've been forced to live a miserable life as an unsuccessful miner if he hadn't made an important discovery one day -- namely, gems. During an excavation, he stumbled upon a huge chunk of glowing crystal. Despite being unpolished, it was indescribably beautiful, and after asking around a bit, Goshen learned that it was from the Starfall Isles and from a failed arcanite project that had momentarily succeeded before it blew its top, broke down the Observatory, and flew several thousand miles before crash-landing in Dragonhome and generally causing a great deal of chaos. "Don't touch it." His clanmates warned. "There's no telling what strange magic it contains." So, naturally, Goshen did exactly what any other dragon would've done: he touched the crystal. A bright light shone around him, and he felt himself floating up into the air before losing consciousness. And when he woke, he'd been teleported to the Starfall Isles. |
Many dragons couldn't have dealt with the confusion of "what's happened what do I do who do I talk to Oh no no no no no NOOO" Goshen dealt with it much better than any other dragon could've. He fainted. By the time he woke up, he was in a Arcane lair, surrounded by several Arcanite healers. They explained that he'd been pulled through space and was suffering from the aftereffects of a botched arcane spell (which had absolutely NOTHING to do with the radioactive, highly unstable space crystal they shot into Dragonhome some time before). After tending to his wounds and any trauma he suffered, the healers offered to teleport him back to Dragonhome. After his first experience with teleportation, Goshen had grown a little wiser with Arcane magic. Though much of it remained a mystery to a down-to-earth dragon to him, his short experience with it had taught him two very important things. One, Arcane magic is weird and prone to messing with things. Two, Arcane dragons are very helpful. Their magic, on the other hand, is the opposite of helpful. When he graciously turned down their offer to throw him back to Dragonhome, the Arcanites suggested they tour him around instead. The moment he stepped outside of the lair, Goshen was entranced by the stars shining above and the radiance of the Isle's sparkling landscape. This was the exactly the place he'd dreamed about while stargazing and in that instant, he knew that this was where he belonged. At first, the Arcane clan that saved him was reluctant to take him in. They were a clan of very strong warriors, and were exceptionally devoted to the Arcanist. However, when they discovered Goshen had a knack for minding hatchlings and could keep them from blowing up the lair, the deal was sealed. The hatchlings threatening to plan a revolt if Goshen was sent off had nothing to do with his entrance into the clan. Nothing at all. Nope. |

Soft Goshen is soft-spoken and gentle. He is almost always, if not always, found with a squabble of hatchlings around him, and insists on bringing the hatchling council whenever the clan goes out for an expedition. On the rare occasions he isn't devoting all his time to the hatchlings, Goshen enjoys foraging for the clan. He has a little garden where he tends to herbs that he grows for the benefit of the healers in the clan. Goshen also has a knack with flowers and weavings, and hatchlings enjoy going with him on his gathering trips, knowing that he'll weave a little flower crown for them by the end of it. A few months after Goshen was unintentionally yanked through the fabric of space, his sister Wandering Beryl came looking for him. Like him, she'd tired of her time in Dragonhome and was now an aimless wanderer, going wherever the wind takes her. The two share many letters, and Beryl often sends back trinkets she finds on her trips. Goshen loves his sister for this. The hatchlings he watches over, however, are rather jealous. |
