xxxxxxxxxxxxxx It happened slowly, at first. Downfall tended to be that way. Little things- a whisper of tension in the air. But it grew louder, a palpable feeling of discontent. It began to affect the land. Flowers stopped blooming. Food was left on altars and spoiled. The arguments got louder, and louder. She wanted to cry out, to ward off the disrepair. But she could not.

They argued over their importance. The once-harmonious spirits grew suspicious of one another- she knew not whether by their own will or that of an outside force- and the shrine began to fall apart. She watched with a heavy heart as they took up arms against one another. But soon the spirits grew weaker; their forms changed, warping, some transforming into beasts. Others descended into madness, or fled far away, never to return. The people left with them- claiming the land was no longer sacred- and the once-revered gods were now little more than wandering ghosts.

Yes, she supposed, she had been there for it all. For its birth. For its life.

And for its downfall...
