When will you find your way down?

Watching where one is going is usually a survival skill that everyone possesses, but not everyone chooses to use it to its fullest extent. This was especially true of the starstruck Coatl, a young and wild soul that was so enamored with his surroundings he couldn’t help but keep his eyes skyward as he moved through life in the Forum. This had him in trouble more often than not, and today was one of those “more often” days. He’d just managed to stumble into a merchant’s table and said merchant was now quite angry with him. He’d tuned the older dragon out a good two sentences ago.

“Do you know what follows you? Disaster! Calamity! You’re an accident waiting to happen, a moving mess! I don’t know why anyone lets you stay around here! You! You! Are you listening to me?” The older dragon waved his arms frantically in front of the younger Coatl who finally put himself back in the present.

“Huh? I’m sorry about the table, look, I’m busy can I just…” He ducked around the table, crushing a bit of the merchandise under his fleeing feet as he darted for the treeline. He heard the merchant begin pursuit and quickly beelined for the tree he’d made his home. He threw himself into the narrow opening of the den he’d made for himself and quickly scrambled as far to the back as he could push himself. He seriously needed to hollow this thing out more when he had the time.

“Hey you worm! Get back here and pay for that broken merchandise!” The other dragon made a charge for the entrance and he pressed even tighter into the corner, fear gripping his chest. He was cornered. Cornered and it was dark and the walls were closing in and--

”Are you with us?” The words sounded like they were through a fog. He wasn’t home. This wasn’t his hole, where was he? He started to sit up but something pushed him back down. No, someone pushed him back down. Groggily he shook his head, trying to clear it.

There was indeed a few dragons around him. He wasn’t in the forest, rather back in what looked like a lair common to the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. He turned his head this way and that, trying to make sense of his surroundings but he couldn’t gather much more. The voice spoke again, much clearer this time.

“Save your strength, Meila is on her way to meet you now. You got a name?”

“Do I--who is--” The words were slurred. They felt foreign to his tongue and he groaned. “What happened?”

“We found you getting dragged back here by a very, very angry Pearlcatcher.” One snorted. “He was intent on making you pay one way or another and was ranting about sending you to the Shadowbinder himself.”

He sat up quickly then and looked over what he could of his body. Indeed he was quite sore and had many visible scratches. Another spoke now.

“You’re fine though, promise. We had our healer take a look at you and you’ve got a clean bill of health. Now just relax, Meila will be here soon.”

“Who is Meila?”

“I am.”

It had been some time since Crunch had first heard those words and met Meila, the Imperial in charge of the lair beneath the Forum. She’d called him observant and had offered him a place to stay if he put his talents to use bettering her clan. Finding the option better than returning to the surface and making another hollow under a tree, forever avoiding the wrath of the pearlcatcher merchant. He was quick to pick up new skills along with his eye for detail--a keen sense of hearing and a way with blending into the background.

The latter was not an easy feat in the Tangled Wood. Crunch was brightly colored and often made noises when he moved--the reason for his name, in fact--that made it hard to silently travel from place to place. Being in the Forum, a place of stone, he eventually learned to work that to his advantage. He learned to move his limbs in such a manner that it merely sounded like the shifting of rocks, a common noise from the crumbling ruins around them. What noises wouldn’t blend he muffled with an extravagant coat, as much an accessory as a survival necessity.

It wasn’t long before he acquired the most integral piece to his job. On one of his nights out, standing on the edge of the Forum and listening to a group of Fae gossiping, Crunch caught sight of an object plummeting to the ground. The impact was close enough to make noise, and while the Fae seemed too engrossed in their conversation to go investigate, Crunch was more than curious enough. He made his way carefully through the near impenetrable darkness of the thickest part of the Tangled Wood to a clearing where indeed something lay: a glowing comet. It pulsed with a magic Crunch wasn’t familiar with, but he picked it up all the same and hurried back to the lair with it to investigate.

“A useful device similar to that of a pearlcatcher’s pearl.” That’s what Whine had called it. Move your claws a certain way across its surface and it activate, recording the words of the dragons nearest it. Turn your claws another way to shut it off, and swipe across it’s surface to play back its most recent recordings. It was a valuable tool in Crunch’s arsenal almost immediately.

Of course he remembered most conversations he listened in on, but the comet allowed him perfect recall of everything--and evidence when someone shot down his claims. He still wasn’t sure what Meila was using it all for, but he was certain his expertise with working the device would come in handy when she finally told him. He was turning these thoughts over the day he met her. A Wildclaw, tall and so very confused looking, standing in the center of the hall leading to the entrance. Crunch’s attention was more than piqued. The mask she wore cast an air of mystery about her being that he wanted so deeply to move through. He called out.

“Welcome, traveler, how might I help you?”

“I am in need of shelter.”

“You need to meet Meila.” The Coatl responded, turning to look further back into the area, “Wait here. What’s your name?”

“I…” She frowned, “It doesn’t matter.”

“Good attitude, you’ll be getting a new one anyway. Wait here, alright?” He grinned and darted back into the lair, his heart racing. She changed everything. He had to know more.
