Biography
Carnelian

depths of Dragonhome, there is knowledge —and nightmares.” | _____ |

The Scholar with a Dark Past
Meeting Carnelian, two things are obliquely obvious. His obsession with coffee and his obsession with books. Like many spirals, Carnelian is unsettlingly adept at multi-tasking, and his workplace is a study in chaos. Mountains of perilously stacked books and manuscripts slope into valleys of loose papers and notes, forgotten cups of coffee of various ages and amounts serve as small basins for foliage of quills and scattered inkpots, and hidden in the small recesses and shadows hide exotic origami animals. Instead of tying himself in knots of agitation, Carnelian took up origami as a means of distraction for a restless body or restless mind. Wrappers, scraps, napkins, note paper, journal pages and older manuscripts are all in great danger of finding themselves transformed into birds and beasts. Despite the chaos, Carnelian intimately knows each nook and crevice of the clutter, able to find the necessary book or paper or discarded cup of coffee instantly when he puts his mind to it. Besides the mess, the only other feature of the room is a large fireplace that provides constant warmth and light, in front of which Carnelian can be found sleeping on the rare occasions he does sleep. The manic scholar is always happy to have guests, quick to offer a fresh cup of coffee and chatter away about current events and interesting facts and little drabbles, happy to discuss anything but himself or his work. Very few of the dragons in the clan know anything about Carnelian at all, besides little pieces picked up in conversation or gossip. Some dragons say that given enough time, Carnelian might mention that his original clan had resided in the Cairnstone Rest. Others say he’s complained of how dark and cold and damp the tunnels there were, how nice it was to have fresh air and bright light, now. How he couldn’t fathom ever going back, despite the fact he assiduously studies Dragonhome—texts and manuscripts and journals and accounts of the dark places, of the fall of the pillar, of residual magic, of the Shade. Some dragons say that he never takes off his pouch, that it’s always in reach, and inside he keeps some dark ancient relic of magic. Some say that they have seen him polishing a plain-looking dagger with a single ruby on the pommel when he believes he is alone, and that he always keeps it within arm’s reach. Some say that they have seen him practicing with it and he is obviously a skilled warrior. Others say that sometimes Carnelian mindlessly folds into existence some dark creature, and when he realizes what he has done quickly throws it into the fire. Only the one or two dragons closest to Carnelian know that he can only fall asleep in the light of the fire, and when he does, it is restless and seemingly filled with nightmares. Those dragons have a dark suspicion that the coffee isn’t to be more alert or more studious, but is Carnelian’s attempt to keep from sleeping at all. But not a single living soul knows why Carnelian is so fiercely trained in combat, or why he would fear the dark or sleep itself. And no one asks. |

Art references:
Despite probably being older, Carnelian appears quite young and boyish. Short blond, unkempt boy-bandish hair. (Like the color of his circuit.) Coffee-colored eyes. Red skin kind of the color of his iridescent if you’re going gijinka, pale skin if human. Hands stained with ink. His glasses are a must. Scholarly, brown-colored clothing, a bit unkempt and rumpled. He always is wearing his pouch. All the love if you can include: books/papers/quills, his origami critters, his dagger, and/or coffee. All of them and I will love you forever. Note: His dagger is very old, ancient actually, simple worn grey metal. The hilt is plain metal with an old and worn almost to pieces brown leather wrapped around it. Embedded in the very top of the pommel is a small, eye-shaped ruby. |
