"Get out of my way."

Deep in the mines bordering Cloudy Coast's fields, a lone shadow egg was discovered by the mining crew digging a tunnel to unearth a vein of silver. It was nestled in a patch of deepmine fungi, a few glowing subterranean mushrooms sprouting nearest the egg.

It was carried to the nursery, where it was settled in a warm, safe nest, off to the side. For a shadow egg, its glow was dim, and its surface was cracked... everyone worried that the egg had become dormant or died, despite the shell having thinned, but not withered. Despite this, it was cared for diligently by the denmother.

For the better part of a month, the egg's status remained the same. There was no movement, and its glow failed to grow stronger. The denmother refused to discard it - there was no proof that the offspring had passed, and there was plenty of space for its nest within the small hatchery.

It was Hallow's Eve. The night had settled in cold and with a thrum in the air. Younger dragons were celebrating the brief autumn holiday, causing mischief beneath the strung lanterns - which, usually glowing a pale yellow, had been replaced with lanterns of purples and oranges. Laughter and cackles echoed in the distance, yet the denmother remained dutifully inside the hatchery.

The full moon had risen, shining soft moonlight down on the lone shadow egg. The glow began to radiate brighter, and it gave a tentative shake... a rattle...

The denmother sent a hatchery attendant to fetch Tohv. Though he was jovially handing out treats to the little ones who came by his small hut, he immediately set aside his basket to visit the nursery, eager to oversee the hatch.

In the end, it is said that only the full moon had the power to imbue the shadow egg with enough energy to hatch. The moonbeams caressed its surface, casting a silhouette of the hatchling settled inside. As the clouds parted, thin cracks formed on the surface of the egg, and it splintered. With soft squeaks, a small mirror struggled its way out of the shell, dormant no more. Its shadow eyes were hidden, eyes squeezed shut.

Despite being a bit malnourished, the pup seemed to be no worse for wear than an ordinary mirror. The denmother happily cared for the hatchling, feeding him daily and swaddling him in a soft blanket. It soon became apparent, however, that the development of this hatchling was stunted. He failed to open his eyes for an entire week, whereas other mirror pups would open them a mere day after hatching.

When the pup did open his eyes, it was to reveal shadow eyes of an unusual tint - cataracts had grown over the pupils. The mirror was almost entirely blind. Reliant on scent, touch, and detecting heat signatures and vibrations with his crests, the hatchling eventually learned his way around, all the while guided dutifully by the denmother.

Now grown, Fhey-Rin has developed an obsession with biology. He is knowledgeable in his scientific field, though a little rough around the edges, much like his handiwork. His apprentice and assistant, Pi, is more than happy to deal with this grumpy mirror - somehow, their personalities are cohesive.
