There is a realm that lies between reality and that of fiction. Few can see past the veil that conceals it and fewer can pass freely between the worlds. The beasts that originate from other-worldly realms typically are not kind. They are solely looking out for themselves and disguise themselves to look innocent, obscuring their malevolent desires beneath camouflages.

One beast, by the name of Malum, had mastered the art of malicious concealment. Disguised as the shape of a commonplace Guardian, Malum preferred to act as an angel sent from the heavens to look out for a special dragon. Upon the first sighting of the frightening creature, one would be terrified of her multiple sets of legs, pairs of dark wings and floating halos. Her pelt was covered in archaic scrolls and ghostly sketches, her very essence rather ghastly.

Malum’s inflection was serene and ataractic, almost instantly calming down those she encountered. Her voice entered directly into the minds of those who had the misfortune of meeting her, her wicked mouth unmoving. The beast’s words acted as a sedative of sorts, almost instantaneously relaxing horror-struck dragons. They immediately grew to yearn for her presence, unable to close their eyes without seeing her image within their minds. Those under the beast’s spell would give their lives for the chance to lay their gaze upon her figure for a last time, her name escaping their lips in their final breath.

Malum, like the vast majority of beasts from the Otherworlds, did not use her powers for good. She could delve into their thoughts and find what they desired most. The beast could see their biggest regrets and darkest secrets and use them to her advantage. Malum often ventured into the world of Sornieth, descending down from the heavens towards an unsuspecting lost dragon to satisfy her nefarious lusts. Her intentions were unknown to those she happened across, none suspecting how sinister her innocent actions truly were.

************

The golden rays of sunlight beamed down from above, gently warming the creatures of Sornieth. Beasts of all shapes and sizes roamed the lands, blissfully unaware of what today would bring. Birds chirped and swirled through the skies as colorful butterflies gently floated around cascading leaves. A small breeze drifted through the forest, branches rustling in the gust.

Above, clouds began to swirl, as if a tornado was on the cusp of creation. The sky remained bright, the life below ignorant of the whirling vapors. A small purple speck glistened from the middle of the swirl for a split moment in time before the sky abruptly returned to its original state. No evidence of what had just happened remained on the horizon, the dark purple fleck no longer anywhere to be seen. A lone dragon sat beneath a flowering tree, idly fiddling with a small pile of leaves and pebbles. Tears dripped from the dragon’s face, silently soaking into the earth. The beast was blubbering, small muted sniffles escaping its maw.

Malum appeared from the shadows, her chilling form causing the dragon to immediately freeze in terror. She stepped towards the dragon, closing the distance between them. The fearful dragon began anxiously shuffling back, her eyes frozen on Malum’s figure. The beast’s voice entered the mind of the dragon, her inflection gentle and warm.

Do not be scared, little one. I do not wish any harm on you. I only seek to ease your heartache.

The dragon’s body slumped slightly with a sort of comfort, exhaling a sigh of relief. The tone of Malum’s voice instantly relaxed the dragon, the previous tears beginning to dry along her face. She remained silent, her gaze focused on the bright pink eyes of Malum. The beast spoke once more, her serene tone reverberating within the skull of the sulking creature.

I can rid you of your issues and cease your suffering. That is what I was sent here to do, darling.

Malum began murmuring quiet words, the phrases sounding as though they were of an Ancient tongue. The dragon wanted to be scared, but felt unnaturally at ease in the presence of the purple beast. The dragon’s eyes rolled to the back of her head, her body falling to the ground with a muffled thud. A small smirk crossed over the features of Malum as she began venturing into the mind of the unconscious dragon. Images of the dragon’s life played through the mind of Malum; she skimmed through the memories, looking for the one that was causing the creature agony.

After a few brief moments, Malum pinpointed the image she was searching for. After allowing the memory to play through her mind, she understood that the dragon’s significant other had left her for another. The creature had walked in on the pair acting upon their lusts for one another, uncaring as to the dragon’s reaction. She had calmly gathered what few items she could carry and simply wandered into the forest by herself. A haunting cackle echoed throughout the forest, Malum unable to contain her excitement. The beast inhaled deeply, promptly regaining her composure.

Malum blew a puff of air onto the sleeping dragon, a deep purple smoke escaping her maw and floating around the head of the creature. The dragon began to wake up, her expression holding confusion. Her gaze fell upon Malum’s figure once more, still feeling abnormally at ease. Somehow, it was as if the dragon knew what memory had been viewed in her mind. She mumbled quietly, her gaze falling from Malum towards the ground.

“I just wish he understood the pain I feel every waking day…”

Wordlessly, Malum raised an arm into the air, snapping her slender fingers once. The cheating beast from the dragon’s memory suddenly appeared, falling in a heap onto the earth. The creature’s frightened eyes swapped back and forth between Malum and the tear-stained dragon, fear beginning to instantly well inside of him. Malum stepped closer to the male, the archaic writing along her sides beginning to glow a bright pink. She remained silent, her dark eyes focused on the male. The female was frozen, unable to take her own gaze from what was unfolding in front of her.

Malum raised a paw into the air, flashing razor-sharp talons in front of the male. The beast’s voice entered the mind of the male, her tone vicious and dripping with anticipation.

Actions have consequences, darling. I’m simply satisfying the wish of your previous love.

The male desperately tried to pull away from Malum as she raised her talons, unable to grow the distance between them as he backed into the trunk of a large tree. The beast’s howling laughter echoed throughout the forest as she brought a claw down towards the male, making contact with his throat. She slowly dragged it across his skin, blood beginning to immediately drip from the wound. The male screamed, his body flailing in an attempt to flee. Malum pressed harder against the struggling dragon, further widening the gash. The red liquid began to pool beneath the male, pouring out from the new wound.

Malum pulled away, satisfied with her work. The male began blubbering as blood pooled within his throat, slumping over. After a few moments, his body stopped fidgeting, his own paw grasped at his throat. The beast returned her attention towards the female, tears now streaming down her face once more. Fear enveloped her, but she remained frozen in place. Malum spoke within the dragon’s mind, her face expressionless. Her tone was blissful, dripping with cynicism.

I’m so sorry, please forgive me. I never meant to make you cry.

The dragon snapped out of her daze, tears continuing to drip from her face. She yelled at the beast between heaving breaths, her howling cries causing birds to flee into the sky.

“You liar! Look at what you've done!”

Malum stared into the eyes of the female, blood spatters staining her pelt and talons. The dragon replied, her gaze flicking to the fallen male for a moment.

I only did what you asked. He felt a lifetime of pain within a few short moments.

Before the female could reply, Malum vanished. It was as if she had never existed; no evidence of her presence remained in the world of Sornieth. The dragon crawled over to the fallen body of her previous mate, blood still slowly seeping from the large wound. Shrieks of despair echoed throughout the forest, wails of sorrow resounding across the land.

In another realm, a vile smile spread across Malum’s features. Her bloodlust had been satisfied for the moment, the unsuspecting creatures of Sornieth safe until the beast grew hungry for deception once more.
