Small Little Story Thing

Aurum was dead silent as he trod through the nearly abandoned ruins. He surveyed his surroundings carefully, trying to find some sign of life. Sadly, the only life form he could see was the demon of a warrior walking right next to him.

"You're staring again." Adriel's tone seemed uninterested and peeved, which only bristled Aurum further.

"I wasn't. I was only thinking..."

"That'd be a first," Adriel interrupted with a smug smirk.

"Can't you just say one thing without underlying snark or sarcasm?" Aurum could feel his patience diminishing with every second he spent with the demon.

"Now, where's the fun in that?" He teased, "You going to share what you were 'thinking' about with the class, or keep staring?"

"Not to some bonehead like you," Aurum shook an insect from his leg as he spoke.

"I-" Adriel's inevitable snide reply was cut off by rustling bushes.

Both Adriel and Aurum's stances changed. They had weapons in hand and went silent with anticipation when the forest brush began to rustle around them. The ground rumbling underneath their feet made it difficult to stay steady.

"No turning back now, precious," Adriel teased as he crouched down. Ready to jump at whatever was about to emerge through the leaves.

The tree's collapsed as the beast crushed its way through the brush. A great ROAR shook the ground. There, a Dire Claw appeared.

"Awe, come on!" Aurum rolled his eyes, "They called us over here for some dumb b-" Aurum was startled when the Dire Claw ran past him and Adriel in a rush. It barely acknowledged that it had seen the two warriors.

"That's not a good sign." Adriel's face contorted into something that looked like worry.

Suddenly, emerging from the broken trees was an evil, terrible being. It was a Hydra.

"Uh oh," Adriel was cut off by a tail meeting his body and throwing him across the forest.

"ADRIEL!"

Aurum slashed his sword toward the Hydra and knicked its eye, causing it to roar in annoyance and pain. Then he ran towards the direction in which the beast had catapulted Adriel.

When he approached him, he found that Adriel must have hit his wing quite hard against the walls of the ruins. It had contorted and looked like it was already swelling.

Aurum promptly pulled out the bandages he stored in his bag and began to wrap the other warrior's injury.

"Urgh," Adriel rubbed his head as he came to.

"One of Malum's best warriors couldn't last longer than two seconds against one of its own beasts. How pathetic." Aurum finished wrapping Adriel's wing and turned back towards the destructive beast.

"Oh, shut it. It could have just as easily been you that got tossed like a rag doll." Adriel shakily got back on his feet and picked up the sword he'd dropped.

"You got a plan?"

"You're leaving this up to me already? Why don't you come up with a plan? I got punted into a wall only a few moments ago."

"That beast is from your hellish tribe. I don't understand why they needed a Warrior of Vita for something like this. That thing is your problem, as far as I'm concerned."

Adriel grumbled with annoyance. "It's not my fault, and if you can recall, I didn't start as one of the Malum's warriors."

Aurum frowned at the reminder of Adriel's true origins. He took a moment to consider his reply. "Alright, you have a point, but you still have a better idea of the Hydra's limits than I do. Do you have any suggestions or ideas on how to get rid of it?"

Adriel's face flashed with something Aurum couldn't quite place before he grimaced with pain.

"I'm not in the best shape right now, and I'm pretty sure I hit my head on that wall, but I heard if you use fire to scorch the stumps of each of its decapitated heads, we should be able to kill the Hydra."

Aurum frowned, "You're right. You must have hit your head if you think I'm getting close enough to that venomous creature to cut off each of its heads," he added gruffly, "Why does everything have to be so complicated with these dang Hell beasts?"

Before they could continue their argument, a ROAR sounded from behind them. The Hydra had long forgotten about the warriors, and its new burning rage turned into fuel as it began to trek closer to civilization.

"You got a better plan?" Adriel's eyebrow arched in question.

Aurum sighed, "I suppose not. I'll go first, then."

Aurum leaped back into action with ease and grace. He was the best at what he did, and with him and Adriel working as a team once more, this beast didn't stand a chance.

He lunged past the beast, narrowly avoiding a fatal injury. He could feel his heart pumping with the adrenalin that battle gave him.

He reached his goal. A large, aged torch mounted on one of the decrepit walls of the ruins. He didn't even have to look behind him to know that Adriel was already back in action, slashing at the beast, attempting to distract it.

Aurum used his strength to pull the rusted torch off the wall and doubled back toward the battle.

"Adriel! Catch!" Without any other warning, the torch was flying in the air to Adriel. He snatched the torch from the air as the beast focused on Aurum.

"That's right, ugly monster! Look over here!" Aurum waved his arms. His sword was slung at his hip and easily within reach.

The monster's giant heads stretched out to Aurum in a blink of an eye. However, not nearly fast enough to catch Aurum off guard. In that millisecond, he had his sword in hand and cleanly swung it, decapitating all three of the monster's heads in one slash.

"Now!"

In that exact second, the dragon's stumps became scorched by flames. The beast slumped over in defeat with a final earthquake roar. That didn't stop its three decapitated heads from screeching for another minute.

Adriel walked towards him and threw the torch into one of the mouths of the beast.

"Well, that was quick," Aurum commented as he sheathed his sword back at his hip.

"Did you actually expect that thing to last longer than a few minutes against us?" Adriel smirked.

Aurum chuckled, "You're as humble as ever."

"You've gotten better with that thing," Adriel gestured towards the sword Aurum had drawn in battle.

"Are you suggesting I wasn't good before?" They were now standing face-to-face. Closer than they'd been in years. Not since before.

"Now you're just fishing for compliments," Adriel smiled gently, and Aurum couldn't help but return the gesture.

"Perhaps I am, but maybe you should just say it anyway," Aurum rocked back on his heels and put a hand on his hip, waiting for Adriel's reply.

"Alright. You've always been sharp with a blade, and you know it."

"And what else?" Adriel's smirk grew.

"And you're a finer swordsman than I've ever been or ever will be. Happy now?" Adriel mocked Aurum's stance.

"Extremely. Thank you very much."

"Do you have anything to say to me?"

"Yeah. Your plan was awful."

Adriel scoffed, "Please, it was better than anything you could have come up with."

"Alright. You're an excellent planner with an extraordinarily high IQ. Happy now?"

"Exceptionally."

There was a pause in their conversation where the two looked at each other without saying a word. So much has gone unsaid between them in their years apart, and neither knew how to start explaining their side of the story.

"AURUM! WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU!"

Just like that, the moment of tension was over. Dimitte soon came into view through the brush. He was one of Vita's warriors and a coworker of Aurum's. He was also one of Adriel's old acquaintances.

"Ugh," Adriel immediately distanced himself the moment he heard Dimitte.

"Oh, what are you still doing here?" Dimitte's expression went to a frown when he laid eyes on Adriel.

"This was a duo mission. Duo means two. Ever heard of three's a crowd, Dimitte?" Adriel scowled.

"The mission was supposed to be over by now. I came to make sure that my best friend was okay. Amongst other things," Dimitte took a menacing step closer to Adriel. "And anyway, from the looks of it, you're the third wheel. Not me."

"Okay, back it up. We had a little detour. It took us a while to find the Hydra." Aurum stepped in and gently rested his hand on Dimitte's shoulder, attempting to calm him down.

"That thing is giant. I'm having a difficult time believing you guys had a 'hard time' finding it. "

"I don't recall them calling you over to fight that thing. Therefore, you have no say in how difficult it was to take down." Adriel's face encapsulated hate and disgust.

"Both of you need to calm down. You're acting like immature teens all over again. Dimitte, you said 'amongst other things.' Is there any other reason you needed to find me while I was still on the job?" Aurum's patience was beginning to diminish. Even though Dimitte referred to him as his best friend, the feeling was not mutual.

"You have another assignment. Something boring and political. Your favorite." Dimitte's attention was now back on Aurum.

"Great. I'll take a wild guess and say that this assignment came from Raziel." Raziel was Aurum's supervisor and had been for years.

"Ding ding ding. He needs you now. Said it was urgent."

"Well, looks like you need to get going, and so do I. I'll see you two later. Though hopefully no time soon," Adriel turned away and began to walk toward the direction of the City of Silvain, home of the people of Malum.

"Yeah, see you, Adriel. Sooner would be better than later, in my opinion. Take care of that wing, amicus."

Adriel hesitated and glanced over his shoulder. It seemed like he was about to speak but chose not to. He faced forward once more and walked till he disappeared through the brush and down the path.

"Well, isn't he a treat? Just as friendly as ever." Dimitte scoffed, "We better get going before Raziel sends someone else to find us."

The two of them began toward Uriella, the home of the people of Vita. They went back to their everyday lives. Away from the one person Aurum cared for the most.

End.
