""Don't play with death. It always cheats.""

━━━━━━━━━━━━ b i o ━━━━━━━━━━━━

Farfalla and Vipera never needed to be told anything twice. They learned fast, and they had the kind of empath telepathy which only twins ever do. They delight audiences with their feats of daring team acrobatics, contortionist stunts and magical prowess, renowned and talented actors performing stories both physically and verbally, drawing audiences from all over Sornieth.

The twins did not strive to differentiate themselves quickly, as many twins might; that came much later. As their parents were preoccupied with their various tasks and particularly their mother, early on, continually mistook one for the other, so for the first few years, they played a trick on the clanfolk in pretending that there was only one of them. It meant they had half the homework and chores, but on the other hand, seemed to be eating twice the food, so soon their merry jape had to stop. As they grew, and had to be apart for longer at a time, their personalities began to develop very differently. Vipera, despite his name, was kind and gentle, whereas Farfalla was brusque, impatient and unemotive, more like her mother. They fast acquired a penchant for performance, delighting their fellow hatchlings with imaginative interpretations of clan legends using the two of them in all of the parts. This continued into later years, with the now-adult Coatl twins becoming well known as performers, worth travelling a long way across clans, to get to see. Bard, the minstrel, long ago in his travelling days, once remarked on visiting that he'd thought The Tribe had managed to breed a two-headed coatl, until their contortionist performance was completed and the pair separated to take a bow. And despite the truth coming as a shock, it only made him more impressed. The two moved, thought, spoke, as if they were not two souls born at once, but one soul born twice.

Vipera, for all his name after his mother's favourite weapon, was actually the gentler of the two. So he dressed himself up fearsomely, to compensate. He feared most that his mother might be disappointed in him, might find out that he can't bring himself to harm another living thing. Now, though, his mother might as well be dead. Winterdawn would consider this a vast betrayal of the skills she tried to instil in him from birth; he was clearly the cleverer one, she always asserted, which made him embarrassed and his twin ashamed- and so she taught him, rather than them both, because 'to try teaching Farfalla anything would be a waste of breath'. His mother had no patience for people whose mind wandered, and little enough for Vipera, but she persisted. Vipera could correctly identify twelve species of venomous snake, and differentiate by taste at least seventeen natural poisons by the time he was nearly an adult, and could prepare antidotes for at least five. Unfortunately.
Winterdawn continually tested him by adding small quantities of the toxins to his food, so if he made a mistake or missed the taste, it gave him wild hallucinations and sent him to bed for days. His mother also reprimanded him whenever he got something wrong, saying that he wouldn't get a second chance to make a mistake like that in the real world. When he was an assassin. Vipera couldn't meet her angry expression, face the way her serpent like eyes flashed like steel, and stared instead at his paws in sadness, seeing them increasingly blur as tears filled his eyes. He loved his mother, and his father- from a distance- but he just couldn't do it. The last test she had for him, hunting and killing his first beast clan prey in the woods, he failed utterly- instead of killing the trapped Bramble guardian, he'd released it well out of sight and then ingeniously spilt a little of his own blood with his belt-knife to mask the lack of a corpse. He smeared a little of it in his teeth as well as his talons, before his mother returned, grimacing at the tang of it, and pretended that he had eaten the beast whole before she'd arrived. She was extremely impressed, and rewarded him when they returned home with a set of wing fans, large and richly decorated with Vipers, which snapped out to show a long sharpened steel edge when the fans were at their extent. ""A weapon that no one expects is the greatest weapon of all,"" She remarked, giving him one of her rare smiles. ""Fit for the Vipera that you are. I hope someday you will put them to good use, boy.""
He looked at the fans, thanked his mother, and hid them, conveniently forgetting their location.
When his mother and father left The Tribe, Vipera was one of the few to genuinely weep to see them go- but he waited until his mother's back was turned, to do so. Farfalla curled around him in comfort, but could not share the sentiment- her heart had been hardened long ago, if it had ever been soft to begin with.

That night after their parents left, when all the clan was asleep, Farfalla and Vipera went together into the vacated caves where their father had lived in solitude for so many years. They marvelled at the colours of glowing mushrooms on the walls, the patterns made by their progress across the floor, the way they seemed to hum together as the twins passed overhead. They found two pets, in cages, with signs pinned to them. ""To my favourite children,"" It read; ""The golden hearted one and the shadowy hearted one, may they serve you well.""
Farfalla and Vipera looked at one another, and nodded comprehendingly- Vipera was moved to tears, and Farfalla smiled at her father's wisdom, even without knowing them closely- Farfalla took the Parasitic Fungus, which she then trained to hunt butterflies and other interesting flying insects and bring them back to add to her collection. Vipera took the Bramble Guardian, wondering as he looked into its intelligent reptilian eyes whether it might be the same one he'd spared, all those years ago. It looked on him trustingly, and was a great comfort as a familiar, often nuzzling him reassuringly under his hood and nesting in his scarf.
