Glyden

Glyden was a peculiar dragon. In place of scales she was born covered in glorious maroon feathers. Instead of being ostracised for this, she was marvelled for it. She was known as the beauty of her clan.

Because of her clan's connections she was offered many opportunities to travel, and so she did. Everywhere she went she was admired and was always the centre of attention. She was liked, not just for her appearance, but for her personality too. Glyden was vain, but she was also friendly and kind. One of her biggest talents was storytelling. She'd tell of her travelling and recall many exciting moments, as well as make up stories and bring a new light to old myths -after all she had heard many during her numerous travels.

Despite travelling, she had a couple of clans she would always return to. They were her home, and she had many friends in them.

One day she noticed odd green splodges on one of her back-legs. She dismissed it as nothing, just an odd rash. Should blow over in a day or two. It didn't. Instead it spread. Soon her feathers were dropping out. She lost weight and her skin tightened around her bones. It stopped, after a while. She still had feathers in places, but it was nowhere near the full coverage of before. Her tauntly-pulled skin left a skeletal feel and green warts still grew on many of the remaining feathers. Her lost feathers didn't grow back. Probably never will.

Glyden was mortified by her new appearance. She simply couldn't take looking like that. She never looked down on ugliness in others, of course not, she wasn't shallow in that sense, but she had always had her beauty to rely on. To her it was as much a part of herself as any personality trait. She had allowed her beauty to become too important to her, too much a part of herself and now without it, she felt she was nothing. She couldn't believe that others would like her despite her lost looks. So she hid herself in cloaks and garments. She tried everything to stop the disease and grow back her old plumage, nothing worked. No home remedy, no ancient herbal medicine, nor magical talisman helped her. While she was still able to hide the effects of the disease she made a choice. Disillusioned and without hope, she left behind all her friends, abandoned the clans she had grown to call home.

Glyden returned to her homeland, in plague. She dressed herself in layers of beautiful clothing, trying to still appear majestic. But the disease was too far progressed, it was painfully obvious to anyone who met her. At first Glyden avoided everyone, she didn't wish to be seen. But she was a social creature, and it took too hard of a toll on her to continue with her solitude. She found a clan that had certainly never heard of her, that clan was FadeClan. She joined FadeClan because of how secluded the clan was. No one from her past would ever come across her there.

Once in FadeClan, she never spoke of her previous life, never told them about the beauty she had once possessed. At first she kept to herself, did only the work required of her and that was it. But slowly she was drawn into the cheerfuller clan activities. Someone discovered her knack for stories and poetry. Soon all the stories of the clan were coming from her mouth. But what bitter tales she tells! Nothing like the hopeful, and sometimes trivial, stories of the past.

For Glyden is not truly happy. She pines for her old friends and wishes that she could get back what she once had. She probably could return, her friends would accept her all the same. But she has convinced herself that that is impossible. She tells herself that without her beauty she cannot return. Her friends will never know why she left them without so much as a goodbye.
