The silent mental abyss that surrounded Newton wasn't fearsome, or cruel. Lack of noise, if anything, made the skydancer more aware. Of course, many wouldn't understand this madness, and nor did he. Today he was dealing with another injured fae, on account of them being used as a toy instead of being treated like a normal dragon. The blind doctor, however, didn't know anything about this dragon, or even what it was. All he knew was to seal them back together, like the mice and rabbits he'd practiced on decades before.

It was a bit ridiculous, to think of a blind, deaf, and mute dragon being useful. But then once again, here he was, stitching up another dragon. With a movement of his claw he slowly slid the sharp talons down the creatures body, light enough to not cut the skin but close to where he could make out the shape and the wounds. Fun, the thing had a large tear in what seemed to be the middle, and a pool of liquid could be scented... and felt.

Who fed him, or what he was eating, he never knew. But with the lack of noise came the great sensitivity that tingled on every feather, on every hair. Everything was amplified for him, and if he was to somehow magically be rid of his impurities, he would be more useless then ever before. It was a state where he was balanced, happy, and free. However, at the same time, the surgeon was bounded to invisible chains.

The darkness was cold around him, but instead of pushing it away, Newton had welcomed it. He mastered life, he mastered death, and bended the impossible to his own will.
Quote:
This moment is one of those moments I love the most. There is a patient on the table before me, breathing softly in the forced slumber that shields him from all pain. I can sense that it is a strong dragon, clinging onto life although his ailment is quite serious. It will be a difficult surgery, that I know from all the cases like him I already had. However, he will not die today. I am as certain of that as I am of the strong and stubborn force of life that runs through this dragon's body.

His heartbeat, his life, his power is like a hum underneath my claw tips that I do not hear but feel. Sometimes it feels like the world sings with a sort of melody that only I can ever experience. Sometimes, that saddens and frustrates me. Often, I am proud instead of this knowledge that only I have.

Now is such a moment as I hear the melody and rhythm of this dragon's life humming through my very core, telling me where exactly I need to manipulate it and bend it back into the right position…

No, maybe it is more like commanding an orchestra to play that part of the symphony a bit louder, with a bit more passion, and then in other parts directing the violins to tone it down and let the light little flutes unfold their full musical potential…

It has been many, many years since I could have described the way those instruments sounded. But I still know how they feel, as accurately as I know how a broken bone or a blocked artery feels.

It is like being a conductor, I think with no small amount of satisfaction. Being a surgeon is like being a conductor to the symphony of life. And I am the best at this job, because no one else can feel it:

This beautiful symphony that is all mine.
