Biography

Story
Written by BlackBeltGI! Story is a bit out of date, but is a nice placeholder until I get to writing an updated version :]

Auric walked down the stairs of her castle, the muted and muffled screams coming from the dungeon bringing an unconscious smile to her face. This was living; a place to herself, where none would question, none would wonder. A place for her, and her followers. As Warleader, it was no less that she deserved.

Finally reaching the bottom step, she counted as she walked through the pitch-dark tunnel. Eighteen, nineteen steps. The fourth cell would be on her left, the door exactly within reach. She turned the key and walked in, giving out a small puff of fire-breath to light the torch on the wall. Enchanted, the torch, it lit immediately, providing even illumination of the small chamber.

A dragon was chained to the wall, various implements of torture scattered about it, many of them stained with blood. Yet, the dragon's gaze remained resolute in spite of the sheer volume of wounds covering its form; it stood, shaky but defiant. “And who are you? Another petty torturer in service of that blasted Auric?”

“You could say that” chuckled Auric, moving over to the whetstone and sharpening her blade in full view of the prisoner. The prisoner spat, saliva mixed with blood hitting the floor. “You'll get nothing out of me. The resistance will win this war, and you can do nothing about it. The Eleven have our backs. Tell Auric that when you next see her.”

“I'll keep that in mind,” Auric replied levelly, slowly sharpening her sword still. “You know, you resistance fighters, still clinging to your Eleven. You should know that they hold no sway in my realm.” The scrape of metal on stone remained even, until she inspected the blade.

“Did you know, that before dragons, back when the Eleven were still a pile of rocks, there was another species? They called themselves 'humans,' and looked rather like the Longnecks we have nowadays. Two legs, two arms, and a head situated above their shoulders. They had their own gods, too.”

Seeing the prisoner's surprise, she elaborated. “Oh they knew of the Ten that were in the pillar, don't mistake me. They prayed and chanted just as you pathetic lot do. But there were others. Gods whose names don't ever survive, but their shrines and monuments do. The god I follow is one who had been forgotten. Forgotten by all but a very few.”

“His voice carried me to the shrine, where I first beheld this armor. Covered in blood-rust, a mask for execution and armor for battle all in one. I knew before I even wore it that it would fit perfectly. The human who wore it before – if it even was a human – must have been monstrous by their standards if they could wear armor fit for a Ridgeback. This god, one of blood and destruction, a whirlwind of chaos, had called to me and given me a destiny.”

She laughed, the sound echoing through the dungeon and bringing new screams from several of the cells. “Do you know how liberating it is, to know your purpose in life? To have it spelled out to you? You lackeys of the Eleven, pathetic worms who squirm underneath the heels of your gods. What do they ever truly give you? There is a difference between being ordered and being shown. My god understands that. Does yours?”

The dragon shrank back, a new emotion filling its eyes. “Auric,” it hissed, finally realizing who it was under the armor. “So you've decided to bless me with a personal appearance, is that it? Your rhetoric does nothing to dampen the fires of my heart. My gods will protect me even in death.”

Auric raised her sword, its metal gleaming. “Are you so certain of that? My god says that in death, all souls return to the eternal chaos, where they are chewed up, and when they can no longer stand the battle they are spat back out into these pathetic forms. That's what we are, prisoner. Those who died in the war of the dead. But I believe, in my last life, I knew my god. We worked together in that war, and won. And now that I am back in this mortal coil, we shall win again.”

The sword rose up, the prisoner clambering the wall he was chained to. “You can't do this! I am a prisoner and am protected under the laws of the Eleven! You have already broken those edicts a thousand times over in your torture of me.”

Auric's smile was visible even through the obscuring helmet. “You said it yourself, I'll get nothing out of you. Don't worry; a dead resistance fighter is so much better than the alternative. Perhaps I'll give your headless corpse back to them for a proper burial. Perhaps not.”

“You won't kill me,” the dragon said, its voice a bit steadier after being given a chance to gather itself. “You know the Eleven will come down on you like a ton of bricks if you do this.”

“And so what if they do?” Auric teased. “I've already said, the Eleven hold no sway here. And never will. Your soul will be returned to the eternal chaos, to fight for eternal glory. Perhaps, next time you are on this plane, we will be friends. But you cling to your gods and force my hand.”

“Wait!”

Despite herself, Auric paused, and cocked her head. “Well? I'm waiting, aren't I?” The dragon whimpered. “I-i'll tell you what you want to know, you maniac.” Auric laughed aloud again; 'maniac' was a high compliment.

“Tell me everything you know about the resistance. Their hideouts. Their structure and organization. Every detail you can think of. Maybe, just maybe, I'll take you out of this dungeon, if you help me enough.” She thought for a second. “How does the title 'Trusted Advisor to the Warleader' sound to you?”

The battles began to shift ever more in her favor, the voice of her god whispering congratulations in her ear with every one. She would often know before the messengers even arrived that her armies had gained another victory, pushed the resistance back even further. Now, how to begin planting the seeds for another rebellion? The chaos couldn't possibly end, not when she and her god were having so much fun.
