The Stone Watchdog | Last of the Stone Sentinels

"You cannot advance. You cannot retreat. Perhaps you should pray."

There are seven towers in Val-ar-Aion; each once upon a time guarded by a great Stone Sentinel which drew life from the sun. They had been built in a time before the old city, when Imperial-kind was young and the secret to destroying the terrible Emperor-dragons was yet unknown. A rival warlord of the Valari commissioned five hundred stone warriors from the An-iel, the Lightweaver's holiest artisans, to defend his clan against the many-headed threat and secure his vast tracts of territory.

Warqueen Noc, a young conqueror then, coveted those lands dearly. It seemed to her that clarions were calling, calling to her from across the parched hills, towards the valley where the white river slumbered: the fierce pull of the Search, strongest of all in the first Guardians. She mustered her generals, and gathered her Clansguard about her like a cloak, and with her company's brightest minds devised a terrible campaign against her rival.

The five hundred sentinels had become legendary, but they were not invincible. The warlord, in his eagerness to boast their might, had sent his stone champions far and wide to fight the Emperor threat, currying favor with the clans he rescued from annihilation. But the cost of these victories was high- already, his warriors grew fewer, their bodies shattered by the unholy strength of their undead foes.
