The Empress
ehm-prehs
Lost | Nightmare of the Toxic Wastes | Subject
tumblr_o1zrsv44JN1ufdm5xo3_400.png

Though their name denotes femininity, the Empress is composed of three different dragons of different genders and is usually not referred to as a "she". Most dragons would prefer to call them an "it", but the pervasive idea that they might still have an identity prevents most from doing so. Samar, Veri, and Lues do their best to keep the Empress contained, but it is no secret that they are within the clan, lurking within the deepest tunnels, calling out names of the deceased and asking, constantly, where they are and what is happening in three different voices. Rumor has it that if another Imperial approaches, the middle head gains clarity... But King Andiron tries to keep the secrets of the Empress under lock and key.

Malevolent Spirit Despite it's gargantuan size, the Malevolent Spirit that follows the Empress is dwarfed by them.
Even so, this shambling corpse knows no fear; an attack by the Empress, were it to happen,
would not kill it - it is already dead. It takes to attacking those who might wander into their chamber, almost as though it is protecting them. Sometimes they call it off themselves. Other times, dragons must fight if they intend to interact with the Empress. It seems to be no malevolence on their part; sometimes, they simply do not realize anyone is there.

Backstory

A travelling circus was going through the Scarred Wasteland, showing terrible, frightening things to those who paid to visit. Mutated monsters, genetically altered Beastclan members, unimaginable horrors... and a mountainous steel cage, covered by a tarp sewn together of animal pelts. The main attraction, they called it. Nightmares and Carrioncorns pulled it along on tall wheels as haunting moans came from inside.

As it passed by, headed for the Arcane lands, the Imperials of the Toxic Wastes began to feel a sense of unease. The cage was larger than any one of them and emitted a frightening aura. As the circus stopped nearby, clan leader Andiron brought with him warlord Yuto - an unaffected Wildclaw - and one of Yuto's best warriors, Alec. Together they investigated the camp and reluctantly paid the fee to see what this "main attraction" was. Two Guardians flew to the cage and lifted the tarp...

...and an Emperor was revealed.

Andiron and Alec were aghast at the sight. Even Yuto flinched, knowing full well the implications of what he was seeing. The Ringmaster, a wicked little Fae, delighted in their responses. He explained that "it" had been captured in a barren part of the Southern Icefields, and easily pacified, as "it" was largely non-hostile. As they spoke, the Emperor watched with dead eyes, its heads barely moving. Andiron, the only one of the group to have ever seen an Emperor before, found himself confused.

Emperors were violent, out-of-control beings that destroyed all in their path until they were destroyed themselves. Yet this one was passive, merely watching the world from their cage and occasionally letting out pitiful cries. The three heads, rather than lashing about, merely moved to stay out of each others' way or occasionally bumped into one another. Abomination though they were, this Emperor was much less of a threat than most of their brethren.

It was Alec, in his sensitive fashion, who stepped forward to speak to the beast.

"Can you speak?" he asked.

The middle head responded first. "We have been known to," they said.

Andiron and Yuto tried to goad Alec away from the monster, but he pressed on. "Do you have a name?"

"They call us the Empress," said the right head. Then the left spoke, hopeful and whimpering. "Rain? Are you here, Rain?"

Surprised by the name of his late mother, Alec took a step back.

The Ringmaster tried to say that their time was up, but suddenly the Empress lurched forward, grabbing the bars with their claws. The Guardians were startled away, and the Ringmaster yelled after them. Andiron was the only one to step forward amidst the sudden chaos.

"Leader, king of kings," spoke the middle head, their snout poking through the bars. "You who challenge the curse of the Light. Fear me not, for I am a fractured whole, not a singular entity of rage."

Andiron stood firm before the Empress. "What does it matter to you whether I fear you or not?" he asked.

"Why are you afraid?" asked the right head.

"Grove, dear Grove," said the left.

"Free us," said the middle, urgently. "Let us be a window of clarity into your fears. Your medic, your scientist, your priestess - they will learn much from us."

The Ringmaster interrupted to say their time was done, and ordered the Guardians to put the tarp back down. He was rattled by the event; in an attempt at humor, he commented on how the Empress rarely spoke, and never coherently. Andiron watched him with hard eyes, and then turned away, leading his warriors back to the lair.

As the circus remained nearby, but seemed ready to leave any day, Andiron spoke with the other Imperials of the lair in a shaking voice. He discussed what had happened, which Alec would back up, and asked for opinions. His mate, Vail, was sympathetic to his traumatized response and said she would back him up, no matter what. Their son Vennon echoed a similar sentiment, and was sure the Empress was as safe as an Emperor could get. Bounty hunter Crius said he didn't fear an Emperor with any semblance of a brain remaining. Golem-construct Leviathan didn't seem threatened. Kethe, all smiles and charm, assured that he didn't see a problem. Alec would follow Andiron, Alec's sister Pluto would follow him through anything, and their brother Ghost was very, very interested in meeting this strange creature. The general consensus was that, were the Empress to be freed by anyone, and go anywhere, the Toxic Wastes was the best bet.

Still, Andiron hesitated. He had seen an eleven-headed Emperor in his youth. He knew the damage they caused, the destruction and mayhem. The death. He knew they were incredibly difficult to stop, and keeping them contained in lieu of eliminating them was safer for everyone.

And yet... the Empress's plight called to his kind nature.

To prevent further mass being gained in the event of a battle, no Imperials were sent in the rescue mission. Yuto led the charge, accompanied by Einar, Jaxis, Beuca, Fenris, and Pollux. The initial plan was to try and sneak the Empress out; this proved futile when a guard spotted Yuto and Fenris trying to lift the tarp. Though charismatic Einar made an attempt to pacify the guard, it was a lost cause; soon they were surrounded by burly Guardians and Snappers.

Under strict orders to not cause any deaths, lest the Empress absorb pieces of the corpses, the group did their best to knock the circus dragons unconscious or subdue them in other ways. The Ringmaster finally appeared as his comrades began to fall, and before he could unleash a blast of magic, Jaxis struck him in the head with the flat side of her blade.

When the tarp was finally lifted, the Empress looked upon their saviors with vacant eyes. All three heads seemed lost and confused, including the previously coherent middle head. The party wasn't sure what to do; how would the Empress be coaxed from their prison once the lock was broken?

Yuto ordered Jaxis to fetch Andiron. He had a hunch about what might interest the Empress.

As Einar worked on the impressively large lock to the cage, the group talked in low tones about their mission, waiting for their King to arrive. When he did, Jaxis fluttering about his antlers, he seemed hesitant and more than a little frightened. He wasn't sure why they needed him, as Jaxis spoke little, but the reason why quickly became apparent as the middle head lifted up from the floor of the cage and locked their dead eyes on him.

"You overcame your fears for our sake," they said.

"You... needed help," replied Andiron. "Even if you are... what you are... I can't just ignore a dragon in need."

The lock fell away, and Fenris and Yuto flew up to the massive steel door and shoved it open. The Empress turned towards the entrance, then stepped out, wobbling on long-unused legs. Though only four touched the ground, there were others, dangling limply from the Empress's body or twitching spasticly as they walked. Standing at full height, they dwarfed every dragon nearby.

One of the Guardians stirred back to consciousness, only to cry out and immediately turn tail when he saw the Empress towering over him.

They lowered their heads, the middle swinging towards Andiron. Up close he saw extra eyes on their face, extra ears, even another mouth below the first. A chill ran down his spine as they carefully bumped their nose against his.

"We thank you," they said. "Please... tell us you will house us. We are not safe out in the open world..."

Finally, a burning question passed Andiron's lips. "Why are you like this?" he asked as his warriors watched him intently. "How are you not a mindless monster?"

The Empress lifted their heads and looked to the horizon.

"We remember so little," said the right head.

"So many deaths..." whispered the left.

"We are a fractured whole," said the center, repeating something they had said previously. "Something happened when we died... Something we do not recall. We are not a singular entity hellbent on destruction. We are... three fractured beings sharing one form. None of us desire more death. We only want to be safe."

"Would death not be a preferable escape from this?" Andiron asked, his voice soft.

The Empress shuddered.

"Death..." the left head moaned. "Oh, how we fear it."

"We are cursed," said the right head.

"We were Imperials once," said the middle. "The cursed breed of Light. In death we become monstrous titans. A second death... what would that bring? Who would we become, if we do not remember who we were? And were we destroyed... Could we not last as our original selves did, waiting to be integrated into another beast?"

The assembled dragons looked to one another with great worry, then to Andiron, who looked frail and weak in that moment. He spoke no more; instead he turned away, and began to lead the group back to the Toxic Wastes. The Empress followed close behind.

All dragons were made to stay in their lairs as the Empress passed through. The largest tunnels were just barely big enough for them, though for many they had to crouch to get through. Down Andiron led them, far down into the earth, down into the deepest chamber of the Wastes - the Water chamber, home to a great underground lake and the Water ambassador, Ysolda. Though she balked at the new addition, she agreed with Andiron that her level of the lair was probably safest for such a beast.

With the unexpected help of the Empress, a new tunnel and chamber was dug out of the earth. The tunnel sloped down from the level of the lake, down as deep as they could go, and eventually opened into a chamber even greater than the central chamber at the entrance to the clan. Ysolda fetched large swaths of cloth to pile into a large nest of sorts, and the Empress settled down, content in their new home.

Andiron wondered if he had made the right choice as he left.

Medic Samar, Scientist Veri, and Priestess Lues were granted all access to the Empress's chamber. The Imperials of the clan were told that they were only to approach with a warrior dragon of a different breed alongside them.

On the next morning of one of Lues's sermons, Andiron hesitantly broke the news of the true nature of the new member of the clan.

Shock, awe, disgust, and fear covered the faces of the assembled dragons. Low murmurs rippled through the crowd as the clan tried to assess the situation. Had their King gone mad? How could he face his own worst fear in such a way, going so far as to allow it into their lair?

And yet... a few voices rang true through the chamber.

"I've always wanted to study an Emperor," said Dipper, excitedly.

"D'you think it'd let me test out some of my inventions on it?" asked Gilinel.

"An Emperor... forsaken by the Light, it seems," mused Spectre.

"How neat! A passive Emperor!" sang Elio.

Second-in-command and "deputy" Ankarv flew in front of Andiron's face. "I ain't about to abandon ya now just 'cause ya done lost your marbles," he laughed. "Let's see this here Emperor, huh?"

Nearby, Tox rubbed his chin with a claw. "I wonder if they might participate in alchemal studies..."

As more voices rang out in approval of their leader's decision, Andiron felt his heart swell. His clan trusted him, even when he did something that could very well put them in danger. He had so many doubts - was saving the existence of an Emperor worth the potential danger? But it seemed his clan would follow him to the end.

Even so, some dragons did not approve. Odol, Plague mystic and acolyte, was chief among them. He saw an Emperor as a failure - a dragon that had failed to survive. Emperors went against all that is Plague, and Odol had enough of that to deal with. He slipped out of the main chamber, wondering what he could do to cleanse this clan in the eyes of the Plaguebringer...

And now, the Empress sits in their chamber, decorated with odds and ends offered to them by visitors. When their vision is clear, they tell what they can; they have confessed to power beyond what any other dragon might hold, a power they fear. A power that, if they must, they will use. Without clarity they are a confused, moaning beast that circles their chamber and wonders aloud where they are.

When visitors come, they are sometimes comforted by the gentle words, so used to jeering and jabbing from their days in the circus. They are offered trinkets, gifts, food, and sometimes Ysolda will invite them into the lake chamber for a drink of water.

Thus far the Ringmaster and his cronies haven't come for them. No one is sure if they will. With a clear mind the middle head says that dark times are coming, but they cannot elaborate more, for their vision is clouded by shadows and mist.

Only time will tell what may come of the Empress. One thing, however, is certain: if they become a true threat, the Plaguebringer herself may destroy the entirety of the Toxic Wastes to stop them.
