now there's no holding back, i'm making to attack
my blood is singing with your voice, i want to pour it out
the saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
i hunt for you with bloody feet across the hallowed ground

like some child possessed, the beast howls in my veins
i want to find you tear out all your tenderness

basics

when the children on the boneyard misbehave, their parents tell them be good, or there will be death from above.

their threats are not unwarranted. hestia was new, when the wastes were young. she new the primal, primordial beat of the contagion, watched thousands upon thousands of mirrors strip a carcass bigger than hers in a second. hestia learned the hardest way to survive and carved it anew with a knife.

warning children about the death from above is not empty. maybe it's been a few hundred years since hestia broke through a ceiling. a few more since she'd tasted dragonflesh. but her name still lingers. she's still on the minds of anyone old enough to remember the time in which she ruled the boneyard. they still cower to look up.

there was nothing gentle about the way hestia was reborn. she broke, and she broke, until the cycle of pain was unending. she was her own undoing.

she was bred as battle fodder in a failing contagion clan. her parents, her siblings, rest their souls, loved her very much before they waste away and die. her grieving mother is killed by their leader for mourning too much, and retaliation hestia kills him with her bare claws. just an adolescent then, killed a fully grown imperial with nothing but her hands and her rage. with nothing left to live for, she murders the rest of her clan in cold blood and takes all her can, and staggers into the boneyard.

her legacy begins not as a monster but as a dragon just trying to live. she raids and she pillages, but the thing that made her scary was that she never left a witness. allied clans would send a shipment only for it to never be received. there was no one there to, because hestia had beat them to it. she grew large enough that her weight allowed her to crash through roofs and ceilings. her wings grew so large that she could fly for days at a time.

she destroyed empires. slaughtered armies. some dragons prayed to the Mother for forgiveness, convinced that hestia was an angel of death sent to punish them. if only; the plaguebringer was much more merciful than she.

when she came to destroy hellreek, she did. only four dragons strong, it did not matter that two of them were gods wrapped in mortal flesh. the walls fell, the blood flew, and when all was said and done akeelah held hestia down by the snout and infectious talons. it was the first, and only, time hestia had been bested, and she expected an agonizing death. akeelah did not grant her one, but greeted her as an old friend. she knew someone about the heartbreak of losing a family, and saw past the violence and the teeth. hestia was not a monster - she was grieving.

and so hellreek grew from hestia's shoulders - she dug the tunnels under the boneyard to which they moved. she still looted and pillaged and stole but there was a lot less murder. she had no more revenge to pour out. her new home was circling the lair and crushing all that may oppose it.

until the seven headed beast crashes through the contagion, wearing all the faces of those she used to love.

the emperor is huge, making quick work of tendrils, dragons, buildings. when hestia gets close enough every face of her family is a punch to the gut. what does it is the face of her old leader, that horrible wretch, attached haphazardly to the neck of her mother's face. hestia enters a rage so powerful that she cannot accurately describe the events that followed. all that she knows is when she comes to, there is so much blood, the lair is ruined, and some of her clanmates look on in abstract horror as every breath she takes starts and ends with a snarl.

hestia's love, kiravae, leaves for the wyrmwound shortly after, while hellreek picks up the pieces.
if asked, she would say it was not fear of hestia that drove her away, but her eyes were water blue and pure, and hestia could see it. she was scared of her. so she let her go. she turned to her other lover, and she and xarouqu comforted each other in kiravae's absence. xarouqu believed her when she said she just wanted to serve the Mother. hestia did not.

so when she finds kiravae dying in the sands, she does not go to her. she waits for her last breath from a distance, and then buries her in the wastes. she doesn't try to hide it from xarouqu, and he is furious. why didn't she comfort her? why didn't she come and get him? he screams and cries and gathers supporters behind him, and plunges hellreek into what can only be described as a civil war. among the bones of an emperor, hellreek clashed.

there is only one loss. mostly a war of attrition, more posturing than anything else. kilanda was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. hestia will blame herself for her death for another century to come. it was just her tail. but kilanda was so, so small.

hestia and xarouqu do not fall back in love over the knowledge of their misgivings. they do not kiss and make up. xarouqu holes himself away and hestia busies herself with work and the whole clan agrees to never speak of it again, silently. hestia takes a mate. she has children. she should not have had children. the clan moves on, with akeelah's eyes as observant as ever, her claw just a little more of a fist over the inner workings of her family.

from there, hestia spirals into a circle of guilt. she wasn't a good mother. she never really loved xaolou and he left her. she couldn't control her son's grief, her daughter's madness; couldn't stop the shade from biting into xaolou, into the clan; couldn't keep dajoji from manipulating lilith into a pawn. hestia keeps it all down. she ties the grief in a knot around her heart and keeps it all down.

the last time she repressed anything, she became the death from above. this time she goes quiet.

she was never a pious dragon; the plaguebringer never did anything to warrant her faith. but when the lair grows legs and rises from the ground, the only thing she could think of is to protect her own. she uses her massive body to shield her family from falling rock and acid. when the dust clears her wings are broken. the acid eaten away at the leather. she cannot fly. but there is no time to heal her. they must move or be caught in a war.

hestia knows that the reason no flight will take them is because of her. she knows it to be true.

when they settle on godless land, akeelah begins to whither. hestia sits and watches her shiver and lets rage simmer just underneath her. no one knows how to save her. hestia curls up around her and drapes a wing over her. the acid from the wyrmwound still not washed off, she watches akeelah stabilize, just from its presence.

she hasn't moved since then; the bedsores are unbearable, she needs someone to bring her food.
she refuses treatment on her wings until they figure out something else. she'd give up the death from above for akeelah. she'd give up anything. for when she was angry and grieving, she was the only one to see her pain instead of her anger.

DEFFER TACTICS INDEFINITELY.
- Akeelah, Leader of Hellreek.

For as long as I've known her, Hestia seems to have a deadening of the nerves that makes it impossible for her to feel pain. She is rather reckless with herself, so it may be for the better, but it leaves her open to really hurting herself without knowing.

Hestia also cut her whiskers short a long, long time ago, so adversaries could not grab them during a fight. I am unsure about how this affects her spatial awareness, but I haven't seen any adverse effects.

Since the lair collapse, her wings have been crippled. I think I could fix them if only I could get to them, but we believe they are the only things keeping Akeelah alive right now, and she won't let me touch them. Fixed after the formation of the wretched, though the leather will never quite be the same.
- Risk, Head Healer.

While her well of magic is not great on its own, I believe some of the Plaguebringer's war magic dripped onto her. She is currently Overexposed, but being an old magic dragon herself, she will not see any complications concerning the magic itself.
- Ex, Head Mage & Magic Expert (translation by Lafier).

She is HUGE.
- Altschmerz, Mutations Expert.

Hestia deals with guilt and grief in a very unhealthy manner. She would do well to set up sessions with me, however she does not, and probably will not as long as she lives.
- Phanuel, Head Psychotherapist.

The lass has this armor...honestly I'm not real sure how she made it. It's all made of different bones and she's a big girl. I don't wanna know how many Snappers she killed to get all that plating. Anyways, eventually I'll get around to asking her how she did it some day - it could come in handy for making stronger armor.
- Foyam, Head Blacksmith.

I was worried about her having some sort of Infection from her time guarding Xaolou, but it seems there is no need. Reminder to check Infection rates in old magic dragons versus new magic dragons.
- Karolyne, Shade Expert.

strength & fortitude: due to a rough upbringing, hestia is an absolute beast of a dragon. she's broken through stone walls and held up chunks of ceiling all by herself. if the plaguebringer's army had her, she'd never need another exalted.

refinement: that being said, hesita is also as close to being a feral dragon without actually being one. she lives like an animal; eating food raw, bathing in rivers, and sleeping stuck to the roof like a bat.

magic: while not magically inclined, hestia is old enough to house old war magic. it seems to have made her impervious to shade infection, and may contribute to her massive stature and strength.
