Ektoma frowned. “No, no, you make it like this.” She pushed Sequoia gently but firmly aside and began to mix a poultice of herbs for the whimpering hatchling’s scratch. “There,” Ektoma said, satisfied with her work. She looked at the hatchling sternly. “And next time, don’t go running into brambles for no good reason.” “I wanted blackberries,” the hatchling replied quietly. “Yeah, yeah. Ask my apprentice for some next time. I’m sure she would be kind enough to pick some berries when collecting herbs for me?” She looked at Sequoia pointedly. “Of course.” The healer-in-training patted the hatchling and sent him on his way.

"Silly things. Always getting their talons where they don’t belong. I never understood hatchlings.” “Well, that’s a bit strange, don’t you think?” Sequoia began to sort the herbs she picked earlier. “I mean, weren’t you a hatchling yourself once?” Ektoma snorted. “Me? Never. A hatchling?” Her apprentice rolled her eyes and muttered something. “You said you would work on your mumbling.” “Right,” Sequoia sighed.

Distracted, Ektoma’s gaze wandered outside the cave to her clan. The hatchlings were playing in the sand. Each time the water lapped playfully onto the shore, gently rushing over their talons, they squealed and scurried away. Ektoma shivered. She could never understand… Perhaps she was a water dragon now, but that didn’t change things. Back in the Scarred Wasteland, water brought sickness. Polluted with the bacteria coming off of the dirty rags being washed, a diseased water source when there was nothing else to drink could be deadly. Dmitriy. Diancie. I couldn’t save them. Ektoma shook the thought away. It was too late, anyway. There was nothing I could’ve done.

____She turned to Sequoia. “Why don’t we try something I read about in my scrolls?” Ektoma kept what her apprentice called a ‘library’ of books and papers. Some had dried herbs pressed between the pages. The healer liked to joke that if there was ever a shortage of plants to be collected, she could always dig into her scrolls and find something.

____Sequoia’s eyes glowed. “What is it this time?” Ektoma grinned and rummaged through her shelves, finally taking out a dusty book. It’s spine was falling apart- yet it seemed to feel important. The healer-in-training flipped through the worn, leathery paper. “Why, this dates back to practically before dragonkind,” she said in awe. “We’re talking the creation of the deities. How could you manage to get your hands on this? I mean, I know you’re not really as ancient as you look- oops.” Ektoma pretended not to hear her apprentice.

____The healer flipped through the pages of her book until she came to a pen drawing of a white flower. “Daisy. Specifically the leaf.” Pointing to a small, hastily-written description, she read out loud- “Eases the pain of aching joints. Also a traveling herb.” Sequoia’s eyes shone. “If only I had known this before! I could’ve picked some for my sister when we were coming here.” “Shush. We have no time to waste; the sun is already beginning to set. Go get some of this; I trust you’ll remember the petal shape?” Her apprentice nodded. “On it.”

____Sequoia returned and placed some leaves carefully in a glass jar. “Who are we testing this on? Aching joints…” “Wieska is complaining about back pains. Spirals are always getting into knots- and I mean that quite literally. Grind that into a paste, will you? Then we’ll give her a visit. Wieska is even older than me, you know. So maybe you’ll have someone else to pick on after we meet her.” Sequoia grinned and elbowed her mentor. “Don’t be silly. I bet it’s not nearly as fun as seeing you get all riled up.” Ektoma hissed, then began to laugh. And as darkness came over the Clan of Rolling Tides, two dragons, an apprentice and her mentor, worked side by side as they joked the night away.
