His footsteps echoed through the finely cut and polished marble hall in an even rhythm as his eyes drifted both cautiously and casually from side to side. What business the empress, Liu Qi, had with him at this hour, Anzao had no idea, but the summons had told him to come immediately. He'd only begun living in this empire a short while ago, so how did she know about him already? Something didn't feel right...

"'Anzao, the Deadly Lotus..."

He stopped, freezing in place at the reverberating, feminine voice.

"Named so for his incredible aptitude for swordplay. Able to kill with one...precise...cut.'"

Anzao's muscles tensed, combat-ready, as he squinted in the direction the voice emanated from. A shadow was cast on the far wall of the hallway, walking in calm, measured steps. And then, Empress Liu Qi walked into view. Stoically, slowly, she turned to face him. "That is who you are, aren't you?"

The swordsman relaxed a little, and walked closer to the woman before kneeling. "It is. How can I be of service to my empress?"

"I require protection," she stated. "Protection from the shadows... Someone I can rely on to kill the unseen, and who I can entrust with secret tasks. You are a swordsman of some renown, and a son to a failing homeland."

Anzao's eyes twitched, hidden from the woman by his bowed head. His homeland, the Lotus Kingdom, was failing in strength in recent years. Its leadership was imploding, and all the people suffered because of it. Despite his love for his homeland, Anzao had chosen to move to this empire, which seemed to only grow in strength. Perhaps he could find a way to save his own homeland...but, more realistically, he now had a secure place to live. Ideals rarely came to fruition. One had to look at things realistically and act accordingly if one was to survive this life. He'd based everything upon this way of thinking...and it had served him well, thus far.

"I have left my old home," Anzao answered, a coldness to his voice and, as he raised his head, his face. "I live beneath the powers which govern this land, now." Again, he lowered his head humbly. "I am your humble servant. Tell me what you would have done and I will see it done."

A small, oily smile lifted the corners of Liu Qi's painted lips. "I am glad to hear it."

Time passed, and Anzao became like a shadow to Liu Qi. He quietly thwarted assassination attempts, ran whatever errands she sent him on, and was always nearby, unseen, when she was wandering the palace halls, in a meeting, or making a public appearance. He never gave much thought that anyone in his lady's family wouldn't already know about him, but one day, while he was standing guard, he was approached by Princess Dai Lin, who was wondering who he was.

Unfeelingly, he replied, "Anzao, bodyguard to the empress."

"I haven't seen you around here before," she commented. She looked a bit troubled, too.

"I was hired some months ago. I suppose your stepmother never felt the need to tell you about me," he replied.

"Hmm... I would have seen you with her, though..."

"I am not usually so open with my location," he answered. "I protect the empress from the shadows, watching for anyone who may pose a threat."

Anzao decided not to mention that he also went on certain "errands" for the empress. That would come across as more sinister than he intended, he was sure. Besides that, those were probably meant to be private.

"Oh, I see." The young woman brightened at the explanation, though he thought he could still see a hint of fear in her eyes. "That makes sense. Well, goodbye!"

The princess left, then. He did not see her very often after that. It was curious behavior...but she also reminded him of someone. He was sure it was only by reputation, so whoever it was, it was probably not his concern. It was something that he couldn't quite let go of, however.

Then, one fateful day, she came walking right up to him. Well, not walking... She looked like she was in a hurry. Something about that intense look on her face and her rapid steps sent a flare of adrenaline through Anzao, but he kept his body under control, and had begun reasoning with his instincts when she blurted out, "You're from the Lotus Kingdom!"

The bodyguard certainly hadn't been expecting that to spill from the princess' mouth. Hardening his expression, Anzao resolutely informed, "The Lotus Kingdom was once my home, but my loyalty lies with Empress Liu Qi and her famil-"

"Please, tell me everything about it!"

Anzao was shocked into silence. Just what was this all about?

Sensing his confusion, perhaps, Dai Lin's tone and expression softened. "My mother was from the Lotus Kingdom. She died from exhaustion after giving birth to me, so I know very little about her... Please... Can you at least tell me what her homeland was like?"

Thoughts of the Lotus Kingdom flooded Anzao's mind, and his pride in it suddenly sprung to life, reaching out from his heart like the boughs of a great tree. The words came so easily, images of the kingdom's most beautiful scenes stretching out in his mind's eye as though he were viewing them right then...but Anzao's mouth remained a flat, unmoving line. He tried to rein in his emotions -- to be practical in heart and mind before speaking. All the while, the princess's eyes glistened in hope, fear, and anticipation, locked onto him.

Quietly, Anzao loosed a sigh. He closed his eyes. "The Lotus Kingdom...is special to me. But it is now in my past. My future lies in this empire."

The swordsman started and his eyes snapped open as he felt something touch his hand. Dai Lin was looking at him with...sad eyes?

"You miss your home so much..."

Anzao felt paralyzed. He was so resolute...how could she have cut so easily to the pain within him? His mouth moved, and he heard his voice speak. "What was your mother's name?"

The bodyguard had no idea why he asked her this. It was a foolish question, which had no rational reason for being asked. But his heart nearly stopped when she answered.

"Ci Huai."

She was who Dai Lin had reminded him of! The late princess of his homeland, Ci Huai! Now he remembered from his history lessons that she had gone to a foreign land to marry a powerful emperor's son, but had died. And now, he was in the very presence of her daughter.

Hardly able to stop himself, Anzao fell into a kneel, head bowed low before the blood-related princess of his people. Ci Huai's death was the very reason the Lotus Kingdom was collapsing from within. Some were furious at her death, others fought to retain peace with their powerful neighbors... And now, here stood her daughter, and perhaps the key to peace.

Dai Lin was oddly self-conscious at the act, and Anzao blushed in embarrassment. Of course; he was a vassal of her stepmother's. Even though she was the princess, he shouldn't be paying her tribute like that. The two stumbled awkwardly over trying to smooth out the incident, and eventually he was left standing there, embarrassed, while she had gone off to some lesson or other. It wasn't the last time she found him, however, and their meetings became more frequent. Each time, he was careful to remain completely stoic, but every time, he would also tell her a small story about the Lotus Kingdom. She was fascinated by each one, and Anzao found his heart warming towards her. Every time she would leave, he would be in better spirits, only to chastise himself for his growing feelings. She was a princess, and he served her stepmother. A relationship was not only impossible, but absolutely inappropriate. Simply telling her stories of her mother's homeland is fine, though. he reasoned to himself. And so, Anzao kept meeting in secret with Dai Lin, believing that he was successfully quashing his feelings toward her.

But then, one day, an hour or so after his latest encounter with the princess, a man came to him in the training grounds. Anzao had been practicing in private, and he recognized the other as the court jester of all people. And, for whatever reason, he seemed angry.

"You and Princess Dai Lin sure spend a lot of time together," he commented.

Anzao froze in surprise, donning his impassive face. "What do you mean?"

"Don't be like that," the fool replied, shaking his head, "She told me that she meets with you as often as she can find you."

"She did, did she?" Anzao made to ignore the man and continue with his sword drills.

"Don't you ignore me!" the jester snapped, jabbing a finger into Anzao's arm.

The bodyguard's reflexes took over, and he stopped his blade just by the other man's neck. There was a nervous look in the fool's eyes, but his expression remained resolute. Anzao's mind began to churn, and, tilting his head slightly, replied, "You should not interrupt a swordsman while he is training... And why would the court jester care so much about who the princess speaks with, or how frequently? Does she not visit with every servant in the palace? By your own word, she even talks to you."

The jester, Chou, looked indignant, but even if he had anything else to say, he didn't say it. Anzao figured that was smart of him. He was really beginning to annoy him. Instead, Chou stormed off...but Anzao began wondering if he shouldn't begin to spend time in Chou's shadow...just to confirm his growing suspicions.
