Biography
Tor the Imperial
Supervisor of Commerce
Supervisor of Commerce
Allegiance Clan Brayuh |
Personality: With strangers Tor can be a bit hard to read, as he makes an effort to present a polite, impassive front to the world. He knows some dragons can underestimate him because of his deafness, which while irksome, can't be helped. A consummate professional, he readily proves again and again that he is not to be taken lightly, and inability to hear does not make him somehow less capable. Alone with friends he reveals a shy, quiet kindness. Soft-spoken and easygoing, he gets along well with just about anybody. History: Tor was born an imperial hatchling like any other; happy, playful, inquisitive, and from a young age he showed a lot of shrewdness that made him seem perfect to be the heir to his family trading business. However, at a young age he became chronically ill with nasty ear infections, which eventually resulted in the rupture of his left eardrum and irreparable damage to his right ear. By the age of twelve he was completely deaf on his left side, and profoundly hard of hearing on his right side. Gradually, though, he learned to cope. His parents helped him learn sign language, which he performed with his normal hands while sitting and by projecting magical hand-shaped light constructs while walking or lying down. It made things a lot harder for communicating with hearing dragons who didn't understand sign language- he frequently had to resort to a notepad that he kept in a pouch around his neck to convey basic ideas in the absence of his parents- but he quickly proved that it wasn't going to stop him from living up to the dreams his parents had for him. However, his parents passed away when Tor was still a teenager, leaving the business in the adolescent imperial's unready hands. To the surprise of literally everyone, Tor was able to keep things afloat despite his lack of experience and a very stormy season crashing many of their ships. However, he knew that if they were going to hang on long term, he needed to do something drastic. Exploring the resources of his father's various suppliers, he eventually chose the textile merchants, Clan Brayuh, and approached them with an offer. He would merge the family shipping business with their cloth industry, slashing the costs for them to ship their goods, if they gave him the capital to replace lost ships and repair damaged ones from the previous season. The Clan was surprised by the offer, but readily agreed. Because one of their clan, Rollo, had been mute since youth, both he and his daughter Tamar understood sign language, so Tamar offered to become Tor's full time interpreter, an offer he very gratefully accepted, as lip reading was not very accurate with so many different dragon mouthparts and writing back and forth with hearing dragons was slow. The partnership proved to be extremely fruitful, with Tor often exchanging advice and experiences he'd learned apprenticing under his father with the clan's merchants, and they doing likewise for Tor. Eventually, the merger became so inextricable that Tor considered Clan Brayuh to be as much his family as his own people, and cared as much about their business as his own. In his adulthood, he would become the head of commerce over the entire clan, managing all of its assets and business dealings. |
