MARCEL - Bayou Spirit
The mists are dark and deep, and the air heavy. Mosquitoes hum and whine as they flit through the heavy air, and the shadows undulate between the trees, claiming this land as their own. The bayou is a murky place, alive without revealing itself to anyone but the quietest, the most observant. And those who tramp through, unaware of the thriving world beneath their feet? Oh, heaven help them. Because Marcel knows. He knows the ripple that means a trout has fallen victim to a caiman, and the shift in the currents that means the Pohips have traveled upstream again. When the summer night air stills, he can feel the tension on the wind as the crickets wait for the right moment to sing, and he knows when the beasts at the edge of the swamp turn away, deterred by the presence of something stronger lurking beneath the still waters. Marcel knows how the bayou ought to be, and he knows what happens to those who disturb the order of things. Of course, no one else knows what happen. It is said that dragons disappear, dragged down into the mud and peat until they are no more, made a meal for the kelpies. But it is also said that they melt into the trees, slowly consumed by twisting roots until the line between beast and bark is blurred past recognition. And still others say that something waits in the water, something hungry and fierce and careful. A predator. Marcel does not correct them. He sinks into the muddy waters, and he waits. Sometimes, though, he can be coaxed to leave the depths of the swamp. It must be the right offer, of course, but it can be done. Most recently, he has been charmed by the dragons of the Moon Siren Coven. As dragons, he does not care for them. Their practices do not appeal to his own, as they are not nearly plant-based enough for his liking, and their intense religious fervor is off-putting. Religion, Marcel thinks, should not come as a roaring flood into one's heart. It is best like the bayou, a slowly shifting understanding of the world, one guided by natural law and simple principle. But still, the dragons of the coven have paid him well to search for a missing member, and he cannot deny such a fine offer. They have promised enchantments for his bayou, spells to ward away evil and to encourage the growth of the ancient mangroves and their knotted, swirling roots. All they ask is that when they come, he will guide them through the treacherous waters and protect them from the things within. It seems a fair deal to him; they only arrive when they need to pass through quickly, and there is not much Marcel must protect them from. He is, after all, the most dangerous thing in the waters. But let them think they need him. Let them believe there are darker things stirring beneath the surface, hungrier things that it takes the knowledge of a bayou spirit to ward off. So long as they believe they need him, so long as he pretends he is crucial to their survival, the spells keep pouring in, and the bayou becomes stronger, lusher, older. He too soaks up that power, tied as he is to the swampy waters. His own witchcraft grows in strength, and each evening that he wakes, there is new vitality in his bones, a warmth to combat the cool chill of the mud all around. Marcel will make use of these witches as long as he can. Should he catch wind of their missing member, it is perhaps in his best interest not to share such information, or to give only fragments of what he learns. Why lose the coven's outstanding patronage and fearful reverence when he can keep them close at hand for all his days? Why chance losing their alliance when he reaps so many benefits? The bayou is a patient thing, always waiting, growing, biding its time. Marcel knows it as well as his own heart. He and the bayou are much the same. Bio by Tues. |
