He is smoke and sun, shadow and dust. He curls around the small spaces of the world with infinite ease, sidling up alongside the unwary and wreathing them in darkness. Pale embers flutter from his touch, and a darkness fills the air around his wings, a deep, fathomless void visible only out of the corner of one's eye. Rift is everything intangible about the night that makes it so unsettling, and he loves it dearly.

Rift was not always so ethereal and menacing. Once, he was a happy hatchling, born with sunlight streaming down his back and warming his little heart. He was excitable and free, a creature of daylight and joy. But shortly after his birth, the world fell into deep shadow, and the sun trickled away into the thinnest halo around the moon.

His clan called it an eclipse. To Rift, it was the end of the world.

After that, he withdrew, and became the wraith-like creature he is today, haunting the hills with the ghost of a wicked grin on his face. The rumors say that the light of the sun scalds him, and that he grows stronger with the waxing of the moon, but since no one can track scentless smoke or endless darkness, it's hard to be certain at all.
