B I O G R A P H Y
When Forgiveness was born, his parents had no way of knowing who he would grow up to be. They had no concept of the things he would do in his lifetime, the dragons he would meet, the places he would go. Once he left the Inn to pursue an apprenticeship, they would, in all honesty, most likely never see him again. There were, of course, the few who did return to the Silent Crow Inn, but this was not all that common. The Silent Crow in not analog, a sliding scale. It's very difficult to be only partially involved. The Inn is more like a great, heavy, metal switch. Once you're in, you're in too deep. So of course, when the silver-scaled boy was first hatched, his parents could do only one great service for him; the bestowing of a name. Dawn, the boy's mother, saw something soft in his purple eyes, something that few of her other children had displayed. And right then and there, Dawn named her youngest child 'Forgiveness'. I could tell you all sorts of tales about the Silent Crow Inn and its rather unusual inhabitants. I could go on about the dealings of Chisai, the founder or offer the wondrous account of the coming and going of Sunset, the traveller, or perhaps I could simply tell you the tale of the Inn's establishment. I could. I most certainly could. But I'm not going to. This story is about Forgiveness and how he lived up to his name. So I'll condense his childhood, his youthful exploits around the Tangled Wood and that one fateful market day that determined his life for the next three years. The story I want to tell, the story that Forgiveness deserves, does not concern those things. Let's jump ahead. |

Apprenticeships are curious things. A clan representative or merchant takes the clan's young dragons to market day once they are old enough to properly work and seek their fortunes. Potential employers offer various amounts of money to the clan in exchange for the young dragon's apprenticeship. The dragon is whisked off to the employer's clan or endeavour and works there for anywhere from a year to five, earning their price back. Some then return to their home territories or even to their home clans. Some travel. Some continue to work in the clan they were apprenticed in. Some simply leave for a new home. Forgiveness's problem was simple: his heart was too big and too kind and too open. He cried when Eloise, the Inn's merchant came to take him to the market. Daybreak and Dawn consoled him, but they knew how this worked. He had to go. The clan Forgiveness was apprenticed to was located in the Windswept Plateau. It wasn't as far from home as it could have been, but Forgiveness missed his parents. His heart strained towards the Tangled Wood and would have pulled him with it and sent him running home, had it not been for his new clan. They kept an eye on him and made sure that he worked hard. Still, his heart was torn with the strain of his near-constant wishing for his siblings. They were never the closest nest, to be sure, and as the youngest, Forgiveness was smacked around a bit, but his older brother and sisters meant the world to him. They were heroes to him, their memories plated with gold. |

During the course of his four year apprenticeship, Forgiveness never thought of closing his heart up. He wanted to, subconsciously. If only other dragons didn't matter to him so much, he wouldn't cry every time he was alone. Still, he kept loving. He kept offering earnestly friendly smiles to strangers. He kept trying to make Crystal laugh when he had time off and could visit her. And then he would retire to his assigned living space at the end of the day...and he would cry. It wasn't easy, Forgiveness's apprenticeship. But he managed to push through it. On the day of his release ceremony, something changed in Forgiveness. All those four years, he had been planning to run right home to the Tangled Wood as soon as he was released from his apprenticeship. His parents would be so happy to see him. He could ask about the whereabouts of his siblings. He could see the others he had known growing up. Sunbeam and Iko and Cilan. But as he felt the excitement of his newfound freedom welling up in his chest, something stopped him. Why did he really want to go home? Was it honestly out of love? Well yes, of course, but there was something more. He was angry. He had basically been sold. His siblings hadn't been able to say goodbye. Iko had told him that this was best. Best! Crying himself to sleep more than half of the time for four years was best. He was angry. He was so, so angry. It burned deep within him, this anger. He would run home and he would show them what they had done. But as soon as he had the thought, another one grappled for his attention. His new clan. His big, kind, open heart had brought him closer and closer to his clanmates over the course of those four years and now, his love for them was far more tangible than the distant memory of the love he harbored for the Inn. And so, he took a deep breath, turned his face towards the rising sun...and Forgiveness forgave.
