He's always wanted simply what was best for his family, even if it means he has to go against his morals for them. Benevolence was once firm in his faith in the deities of Sornieth but when he wished to have hatchlings with his mate Mary, every single time they either died after a few days at most or were stillborn from the start. He prayed to the gods for their blessings for each nest that passed by, he begged for the fates to have mercy on their children so that they may have a chance at life; but nothing worked. They felt like giving up on the idea of children, until Benevolence heard word of a miracle blood somewhere in the Scarred Wasteland, blood that could heal wounds and cure illnesses like it was nothing.
Ben wanted to search for the source of the blood but Mary wasn't listening, she made up her mind to go to the Shifting Expanse so that they might have a chance by putting their hopes into science instead of gods and fairy tales. They had three eggs and two died within a few hours, but one survived long enough to hatch, though he was weak and the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Ben's mate may not have approved of him trying to seek out stories, but in desperation while his remaining son's life was on the line he took off in search of the healing blood. Following instructions given to him by the most shady dragons he'd ever seen he found Mondirewick Castle, and found himself falling to his knees before the queen as he begged for her court to allow him to take some of the prized blood for the sake of his son. He said he would do anything if only for the child's survival, and for that he was allowed to take it but only if he followed their instructions. 'If the blood cures your son you must bring him back here, or else he won't survive when you run out. And in order to repay the court for it's kindness you shall become a guard, and swear your loyalty to us alone.' Fortunately yet unfortunately, the cure worked just as Benevolence had hoped it would and much to Mary's shock when she saw their child living like any happy, healthy hatchling would. But he complied with what he was told, he didn't dare risk losing the only child they had and if this was the cost well, he did say he would do anything for him. He was appointed as a knight, while his mate took to looking after the divine royalty when she decided to follow him to the castle. Ben's son still lives, and since the fates allowed him to do so he was named Mercy, and while he is so adored by his parents his father shudders everytime he must see his 'medicine' applied. It would be all too easy for the court to stop healing him if Ben stopped working, so no matter how much it hurts him both physically and mentally he continues to shoulder the burden for the sake of his loved ones. He doesn't dare think about what would happen if he stopped working, be it temporarily or permanently. |
