Biography

The word 'putrid' comes from the Latin word puter, meaning 'rotting, vile, decaying', which ultimately comes from the ancient word *pu-, from which we also get the English word 'foul' (from Old English fúl). This stem also came into Greek in the form pythró 'to rot, stink'. The Oracle at Delphi, who was sacred to Apollo, the Greek god of healing, was at a place called pythón, due to the natural gases that issues from the chasm. Here, according to legend, Apollo killed the dragon called Pythón. Apollo was also known as the 'Far-Darter' and was armed with a bow; he was the one who sent plague and disease into the Greek army during the seige of Troy.
