A Guardian must have a Charge. Without a Charge a dragon is no Guardian.
I do not want a Charge. So I am no Guardian.
The Charge ruined my father, such that the Clan turned him into something else to stop him pining away after his Charge, his former Clan, dropped into hibernation. My father is a Coatl dragon now, and his voice is all in tones of grinding metal and rusty squeaks. We do not speak any more.
My mother I remember fondly, even though she died in sorrow, for all their borrowing habits, Ridgeback dragons love deeply. We were an accident my sisters and I, the unwelcome but not unexpected surprise of an evening's guilty comforting. Our father mourned his lost Charge and our mother mourned the loss of her mate, the only other Ridgeback dragon of the Clan.
While I do not think our parents regretted us, they were in no position do more than watch over us as eggs. Once we hatched, our parents parted ways. Our father into a new form and the comforting wings of his Skydancer mate. Our mother followed her grief and gave herself over to the Windsinger, choosing single-minded service over living without Ysengrin.
One of my sisters, Sarannah, devout and proper, claimed our God as her Charge, served penance in the Coliseum and followed our mother to his Call.
My other sister, who called herself Ashes, stood with her face in the wind one day and at dusk she walked out into the green. She never looked back, and never said goodbye. It was the Search Alaman told me, her Charge nestled against her forearm in the form of an icy sprite. Ashes had gone in search of her Charge, Alaman was happy that Ashes would be whole when she found her prize.
There's something they don't seem to understand though, Ashes is doomed to wander the world aimlessly until she found it. If she ever found it.
The loss of his Charge ruined my father. The Charge of my sister demanded her end, and she went to it willingly. The Search for a Charge sent my last sibling into the world alone, and I will never see her again.
I am Ehrde, I dig my claws in to their roots in my Clan. I will not go.
I will not serve an ant mound.
I will not lie beside a sapling and die of heartbreak when lightning strikes it dead as a tree.
I will not guard a mountain and watch it weather to a mound of pebbles.
I will not waste my life looking for someone who might not even appreciate that they would own my soul.
I will not have my choice taken from me.
