The night was cold and damp. Kandi could recall every second of it. First there was just a breeze and light rain, he listened to it. He could hear the music of it, as it lulled him into his sleep. But he was abruptly woken from his half-slumber, a creaking came from the barn door. A figure stepped in. Was his father returning from the Gathering? He and his brothers lifted their heads to watch, but their mother did not stir. The figure's silhouette was not that of a Coatl, but a tundra. Kandi's sisters woke and watched, the whole clutch silently watched the figure as it prowled towards them. They had not yet learned to fear the monsters in the night. There are no monsters, Mother always said, only friends to be made. She was always an optimist. The wind picked up, and the doors behind the figure battered their frames. A waft of warm, metallic scent washed over them as the tundra approached. Mother finally awoke, she stared up at the leering tundra, lightning outside the barn lit up it's gnarled smile, and it's blood soaked fur. She screamed, startling the hatchlings. She tried the pick up her children and run, but the intruder was already on top of her, tearing out her scales. Her howls of pain drowned out the ran, and bleached the happy memories of laughter and love from the barn's walls. Pollock and Geary tried to defend their mother, while Collage ushered Mondrian away. Kandi ran after them. Her once joyous smiley face tainted with a horrified stain of an expression. The screams stopped. They looked back to see their mother's mangled corpses decorated with the gore piles that were their brothers. The tundra ran after the surviving three and snatched up Collage. Kandi had to drag Mondrian away, she wanted to save her doomed sister, but there was no use, the life had already slipped away and going back for her was certain death. They escaped through the crack in the back wall, a secret entrance that once meant mischievous fun was to be had with their siblings. That was no longer the case. It never will be again. Mondrian will never laugh again, neither will Kandi. Their old lives ended along with their family's, they had nothing. The barn was no longer save, their only family was gone. All that was left for them was to just keep on smiling. They had nothing to lose. Notes
