Helios glared down at the smaller dragon and struggled to reign in the rage boiling in his veins. It was a valiant effort, but the twitch of his tail and the sparks of magic souring in the air were dead giveaways that it wasn't working. He stood tall, wings held stiffly at his sides, chest heaving with ragged breaths. He loathed using magic, but for Desolan, he made an exception.

The darker mirror hadn't moved from where he'd landed, but Helios wasn't concerned. They'd both tried to genuinely kill each other too many times for him to think he'd managed to do more than wind Desolan. Shame.

When Desolan shifted to look at him, his eyes practically sparkled. If Helios didn't know better, he'd be tempted to say it was a look of fond amusement, but he did know better and took the grin as it was intended: a promise of retribution. A threat. The confirmation of mutual hatred. The runes along Desolan's side shifted into a deeper magenta as the karma building in his system took on a definitive negative slant.

Helios was sure something was broken- Desolan's tail twisted in the wrong direction- but as usual there wasn’t any reaction from the mirror to prove or disprove the notion. He'd wanted to draw blood, but, again, he was left disappointed; fighting Desolan was always a disappointment.

“Knew you had it in you, Chief,” Desolan hissed, the faintest hint of a smug purr creeping into his rarely used voice.

Helios growled: a full-bodied sound that ripped itself from his chest. He took a lumbering step closer, looming over the other’s prone form. “For once in your miserable life could you… at least pretend we’re a functioning clan?”

The mirror didn’t bother to stifle his laugh. It hung in the silence between them like shattered glass. With a series of jerky, disjointed motions he shifted, paws gathering up under him as he sat and gave Helios a searching look. "You're serious, aren't you."

With a deep sigh, Helios turned and addressed their third clan member. “Patch him up, would you, Revelous?” he grumbled. Without a backward glance he turned and stormed toward their makeshift camp. The sooner he could retreat gather his bearings, the better.

From her perch, Revelous watched, a frown plastered on her face. She wasn’t sure what their deal was- they’d been at each other’s throat for longer than she’d been a part of the clan- but she really wished they’d stop. She loathed playing nurse almost as much as she did playing spy, but neither of the other two had an ounce of healing potential within them. And she did. Lucky her. Cue the confetti toss.

Flitting over to land between Desolan’s ears, she winced at the score of scratches littering the dragon’s scales. They’d already healed over and the next shedding would be rid of most of the lingering scars, but she’d treated a good number of them herself and the memory made her shudder. Even with Desolan insisted they didn’t hurt, she'd still had to knit together the muscles and nudge the scales back into place. Honestly she wasn't sure she believed him, but he hadn't flinched as the healing burned hot.

“Really,” she huffed, cradling the flow of magic in her paws for a moment, “Would it be so hard to behave yourself for ten whole minutes? Five minutes?”

The mirror’s expression darkened his voice dropping into a low murmur that she had trouble making out. “Something’s not right. With the Chief.” He hissed as small paws dug under his fur to scratch against his scales. “You’ve seen it.”

She hummed, mouth pressed into a firm line. Of course she had.

Desolan sighed, some of the tension bleeding out of his shoulders, eyes glazing over as he thought. It wasn’t until the healing magic sputtered to a stop that he spoke again. “I think you were right, Rev…”

She stilled, a cold chill running down her spine. “A...about the hunting?”

“About the hunting.” He nodded resolutely, flexing his claw to test their mobility. Still stiff, he noted with a frown. “There’s something wrong with all of us it seems. Perhaps… perhaps we are better off…” he trailed off, brow furling. “I won’t stop you, you know,” he added with a sigh.

Her paws twitched, claws scraping against the scales along his neck. “D-don’t be an idiot,” she hissed, casting a quick glance around them. Aside from a bird tilting its head at them from the scraggly branches of a nearby bush, they were alone.

Swallowing down the lump in her throat, she tapped out a nervous pattern along her forearm. “...C’mon, Des. T-there’s no way I can take on the others on my own.” She suddenly felt nauseous, but hid it behind a shaky smile and a hollow laugh. “I thought we were in this together?”

Shaking her head, she bit off the rest of her thoughts. They wouldn’t do any good to dwell on. She knew better than anyone how Desolan was; no matter what she said he wasn’t going to change his mind. And well… she did have a job to do...

Desolan sat for a long moment, tapping his claws against the ground. His scales itched as the last traces of healing incorporated into his magic, the runes along his side lightening in response.

The reflective magic he’d collected had never leaned so heavily into the lighter spectrum and he wasn’t entirely sure what it would do if it escaped him now. Magic roared in the back of his mind, pressing against his awareness with the ferocity of a barely contained river. It would be so easy to let it sweep him away. To stop fighting for control. To give in.

And he wanted to.

He was so very tired.

But he’d made a promise. A vow. And the two creatures silent watching him would hold him to it. That, he was certain of. He wouldn’t let the small fae face his brood-mates alone. That was unthinkable. As for the spectral dragon haunting his path… well, he’d deal with that when the time came.

Until then, they were all working towards the same goal.

So he pushed himself to his feet, the yawning emptiness in his chest stretching uncomfortably. “Alright,” he murmured, “We’re in this together.”

“Good,” she said, relief clear in her tone. With a flutter of wings she hovered in front of his face and planted one hand against the top of his snout. “Now you’ve gotta go make nice with Helios. I am not patching you up every time you decide to be a... a… smart alec, got it?” She'd definitely mastered the fiercely scolding look, he thought, a warm fondness blossoming in his chest.

With a shake that dislodged her hand, Desolan stood. His legs trembled slightly under his weight and there was a faint ringing in his ears, but otherwise he was good as new. “A’ight, I got it. I’ll play nice. Scout’s honor.”

She watched him stumble off, frills pressed tight against the side of her head. It wouldn’t take him long to track down the Skydancer, and she hoped she wouldn’t be repeating another healing quite so soon. But she didn't have much hope. The best she could hope for was that they reached a stalemate before someone ended up in a body bag.

Objectively, either outcome would be acceptable, but she really really hoped they could all get along. For a little while longer, at least.

Pressing a paw to her satchel, she sighed at the familiar, burning weight and shook her head. Not yet. But soon. Far too soon.

She turned to give the slinking form of her companion a long look before sighing to herself. They would be fine. She was almost sure of it.

However well he wanted to hide, Helios was not a difficult dragon to find. He stood tall even when resting, an undeniable air of authority clung to his frame and stained his actions. Even when he was trying to hide his aura begged to be noticed.

And the way he glared down at Desolan- as if he were some insignificant annoyance- nearly had the smaller dragon bristling all over again. But he bit it back with herculean effort.

“What do you want this time?” Helios spat out, a unmasked growl rumbling in his chest.

The mirror sat, tai coiling around his paws. The whip-like appendage was nearly straightened out this time, he noted with a pleased trill; there was only one small bump where it didn’t quite lay the way it used to. “Came to apologize,” he muttered, eyes not moving from where they found sudden interest in the delicate scales along his tail.

For a long moment neither dragon said anything.

Then Helios lurched forward, face inches away from the mirror. The tension between them thickened. Helios chuckled as Desolan flinched, a grin spreading across the skydancer's wide face. “Somehow I don’t think I believe you. But you know what? Sure. Why the hell not. I’m not unreasonable. Apology accepted.” Icily he turned away, eyes fixed on the setting sun. “But if you ever think about insinuating I had something to do with my family’s passing...”

The unspoken threat hung between them, carried on the last bloody rays of daylight.
