Subject: #0938
Alias: Brilliance
Status of Runes: Uninvoked
Observations & Notes:

Subject #0938 did not at first develop abilities as her parents and siblings had. It was not until Subject #0938 had a first hand encounter with death that abilities manifested. It was the death of a Satin Mouse that had made its home in the nursery section of the lair. Subject #0938 later displayed knowledge of the burrowed tunnels under the floor. These were soon investigated and discovered.
Subject #0938 appears to have the ability to recall the memories of those that have died in her presence. These abilities require further study. It is still unknown if the ability will work on dragons, and it has not yet been tested for moral reasons.

Blanche was wandering at the edge of the steep cliff, looking down at the wide marshes of the Gladeveins down below. It all seemed so tranquil, the small meandering streams, withered aqueducts and rushing waterfalls. From up here, you hardly noticed the devastation around the Seer’s Pond. They had told her about a fierce and brutal battle between her new Clan and some Serthis tribe. It seemed a horde attacking from the south had been washed away by what could only be called an inland tsunami. Blanche had never heard of such powerful magical abilities but Selene, the Mooncatcher who had unleashed this inferno, would not talk about it. She sighed. Maybe she would earn her new Clan’s trust someday. This battle with the Serthis Beastclan seemed to have had an overwhelming impact on the inhabitants of the Forgotten Sanctuary. But she had not been part of that fight. Though she had been here for a couple of weeks now, she still felt like an outsider. Even in the rather huge Runecatcher community. Blanche swallowed hard as tears welled up in her eyes. New beginnings were never easy. She had been warmly welcomed, she had been allowed to choose where she wanted her new home to be and given time to think how she could contribute to the community. As she wandered along the edge of the cliff, she noticed a group of dragons swimming in the Seer’s Pond. The coatl Heather and some of her Pearlcatcher friends were enjoying themselves in the cool water. When Heather was down below, it could only mean that that creepy Beastmaster Neacal was lurking somewhere in the bushes, too. He was a scary and unpleasant fellow, always cold and uncourteous. The Pearlcatchers left the Pond, but Heather stayed behind. Maybe she should go down and talk to her. If she always kept to herself, lurking like that Afflicted Coatl she would never make any friends. While she contemplated going down to the Pond, Heather suddenly screamed out loud. It was an ear-piercing scream full of agony and pain. Blanche watched in shock as the coatl was dragged under water, struggling against something that was obviously pulling her down. She was almost knocked over by Neacal who dashed past her and jumped off the cliff, wings tightly folded to his body to gain speed. She hesitated only for a brief moment, then she, too, plunged down the cliff. Blanche hit the water only seconds after Neacal. She cringed as the icy water enclosed her body. Neacal and Heather were several feet below her. And there was … something … dragging her down. She had never seen such a creature before, it looked like a hybrid between a snake and an octopus and it was huge. Some of the creature’s tentacles were closely wrapped around the still struggling coatl while others were attacking Neacal who tried to get to her. Blanche wasn’t much of a fighter but she was determined to help. So, she joined the Beastmaster in his furious attacks against the many-armed creature. Some of the tentacles had suckers, others vicious and sharp hooks. Blanche’s skin was soon covered with deep cuts and more than once only Neacal’s swift action saved her from being caught by the sucker-bearing tentacles herself. But their combined efforts finally weakened the creature. It, too, was bleeding from several wounds now and when Neacal severed one of the tentacles with a powerful bite, it finally let go of Heather and retreated into the darkness. Blanche rushed to catch the sinking coatl, she only now realized how deep the pond truly was as the creature fled to the bottomless depths. She wrapped her arms around Heather, using her legs and tail to swim towards the surface. Heather was bleeding heavily from a deep gash in her leg and there was some sort of sting protruding from her belly. Neacal swam to her side and started to help dragging Heather to the surface. The coatl herself was limp and lifeless in Blanche’s arms, she seemed to be paralyzed. Only her eyes were moving. Blanche noticed that she had astonishing violet eyes which were anxiously scanning the surrounding water. She seemed to be looking for something. When her eyes finally rested on something, Blanche noticed that Neacal had stopped pulling. She stopped, too, terrified the giant creature might have come back but Heather was looking at Neacal. The violet eyes found the red, but after a few moments, the violet eyes became blank and empty. And as the life left Heather, a stream of memories rushed past Blanche’s mind … She was hugging her mother and father in the Tangled Woods, so glad to go on her journey to her new home … “I’m so proud of you.” Thalia told her while she was tending to her beloved orchids. “You are like a daughter to us, I hope you know that.” … She was standing next the funeral pyres, tears were streaming down her face. It wasn’t fair, why did so many of her friends have to die? … “Don’t tease her, Prudence. You are just jealous.” She was swimming in the Pond with her Pearlcatcher friends. “Me? Jealous? Have you ever looked at him properly? He is not exactly what you would call a handsome and nice fellow.” Prudence said while she was disentangling her soaking wet mane. “But isn’t it kind of romantic? Don’t you agree, Heather?”… The pain in her leg and belly was excruciating. She wanted to scream, but she couldn’t. She wanted to move, but she couldn’t. She was being dragged deeper and deeper underwater, her lungs were burning, she couldn’t breathe. Then HE came, to fight for her, rescue her. A pale Pearlcatcher was there, too. And she was cold, so cold. She could feel gentle arms wrapping around her body instead of the wrenching grip of the tentacles. She was pulled up, towards the light. Her vision blurred, but she looked around to find HIM. Look at HIM one last time, look into those sad red eyes, how she wished with all her heart that she had at least spoken to HIM once but that chance was gone now…as was she.

Blanche’s lungs were aching, she was coughing up water and shivering violently. Neacal was screaming for help, and she could see several dragons silhouetted against the sky as they plunged from the cliff. The priestess of the Pond and her guard Loras were there first and she was gently pulled further away from the water. Still coughing, she watched as Usako touched Heather, then softly shook her head. Neacal sank to the ground, howling like a wounded animal. Her foster parents, Haru and Thalia, rushed towards their surrogate daughter, prodding her to get to wake up, not believing that their beloved Heather was really dead. But she was. Above Neacal’s wails and Thalia crying, voices rose demanding to know what had happened. As Neacal was beside himself with grief, they turned to her. But Blanche was still shivering violently, the pain in her leg and belly almost made her scream out loud only it wasn’t her wounds she was feeling. Nor were the memories swirling around in her head her own. She hardly understood what they were asking, her eyes went out of focus while she tried to disentangle Heather’s pain and memories from her own. Then Sunfyre had fought his way through the crowd to her. His lips were moving but she could barely understand a word he was saying. “…need to get her away…Don’t you see she’s suffering…her Runecatcher abilities…fetch some opium…hurry…” She was gently lifted into the air by a huge Guardian, one of the Wardens … Tyr… his name sprang into her mind uninvited. As they rose high up into the air she could see Neacal, kneeling beside his dead beloved, arms and wings wrapped around him. He was rocking back and forth while Kieran tried to get him away from the dead body. Should she tell him that his love had not been unrequited? Would it help or only deepen his pain and grief? Tyr brought her to the heart of Sanctuary and she was laid upon a bed with soft cushions. Sunfyre rushed to her side and forced a cup with some opaque liquid to her lips. “Drink this. It will ease the pain and let you sleep. We’ll see what we can do after you are properly rested and healed.” Blanche drank the liquid and almost immediately sank into a dreamless sleep.
