For a very, very long time, Reverie was half convinced that she was cursed. Three times, she had been in love with someone who, for whatever reason, couldn't or wouldn't return her affections. Twice more, she had loved, only for the other to go beyond her reach; first, her beloved Sanneyar vanished in the middle of the night, taken by one of the spirits that haunted the Trickwillow Glen; then Nadir, who was never really hers to begin with, suddenly got it into his head to serve the Shadowbinder on the warfront and up and left despite her protests and pleas to stay. Her children had all followed suit, becoming warriors and soldiers and wanderers who left her behind.

By the time she met Fimbulvetr, she had resigned herself to caring at a distance, to remaining silent and watching yet another dragon who she cared for disappear. Fimbulvetr was, after all, a wanderer by nature, sure to continue her travels as soon as the wind changed. Through shadow and terrified flight, rot and confinement, decay, fear and more besides, they fought and survived together, and still Reverie held her heart at bay, fearing the day that she would wake up and find herself alone again.

But, to the surprise of both of them, Fimbulvetr did the one thing Reverie wasn't expecting.

She stayed.

And, in time, once she was ready, Reverie managed to voice her own feelings (really, it was like one of those silly novels Fim was always reading, which she probably would have enjoyed if she'd really let herself) and decided that as long as Fimbulvetr was willing to stay, Reverie would be too.

(And they lived... well. Happily-ever-after, nice and tidy, all the loose ends cleaned up? Doesn't really work that way, especially when your life is in constant danger and there are things in the walls and machines under the sand, when you hear your god shouting from the Spire and there's not a moment free to rest. But happily together, and as far as Reverie is concerned, that's about as good as it gets.
