Plague clans are not typically known for their kindness, for their generosity, for their love for their children. They focus on surviving in the Scarred Wasteland, focus on living just one more day. Most clans lived this way, day to day, hoping a beast clan wouldn’t come along and destroy them. Most, but not all. There was one clan of dragons that had found a way to live peaceably with the beast clans around them. Life was not always peaceful of course, but they had no need to fear for their safety. The dragons provided food and shelter for the creatures and in return the best clans steered others away from them. Hatchlings could grow up in a clan that didn’t fear the beast clans. They could grow up not knowing fear.

But all good things must come to an end. Not all serthis liked the arrangement with this dragon clan. They felt that the dragons had grown to comfortable in their lifestyle, having no need to fear those around them. They became jealous of their good fortune, jealous of their peace, jealous of their security. Instead of joining them, many serthis clans banded together and hatched a plot that would rid them of their supposed enemy. Late in the night, as dragons and hatchlings slept comfortably, the serpent folk slithered into their clan and began to attack. It was meant to be quiet, meant to be a slaughter, but as blood was spilt, the serthis laughed. They laughed. This alerted the rest of the clan and they fled quickly, taking only what was necessary. Trinkets and baubles were left behind, riches they had gathered. Nests were abandoned, eggs gathered up quickly and flown away from the danger.

In all the chaos that ensued, there was one little hatchling that was left behind. He was from a large hatch and in his parents rush to get their children out of the way of the slaughter, they overlooked his small form. While the serthis raged around him, he huddled into his nest, hidden from the wandering eyes of the monsters that yearned for blood. When the slaughter was finally over, the land free of dragons, the serthis left, leaving the bodies of the slain behind. The little gold imperial crawled out from where he’d hidden and wandered around, not understanding what had happened. To him, the dragons were asleep. None woke up, none stirred, and so the dragon left. He wandered across the blood stained field, not knowing where to go.

It was several weeks before Gilden had any contact with another dragon. Through his wanderings, he’d gotten close to the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He had no understanding of the dangers that surrounded the water and the hatchling fell in. Not knowing how to swim, he stayed afloat for as long as he knew how but too soon he sank beneath the waves. A passing dragon saw the gold dragon and flew to the rescue, pulling the small thing out of the water and into its claws, protecting it from further danger. Unconscious, the dragon could not tell where Gilden’s home had been and so he decided to carry him to his own clan. He flew across the sea towards the Shifting Expanse, towards his own clan.

When Gilden became conscious, he found himself in an unknown land surrounded by strangers. Instead of feeling fear as most others would, he was simply filled with a curiosity. The dragons that moved around him lived differently than the ones he’d known. They did not associate with the beast clans around them but they still lived in peace without worry. The storms in this land were always filled with lightning, dangerous if one was struck by the heated energy. Instead of avoiding it though, these dragons flocked to it, flying confidently in the storms and avoiding the blasts as if they were simply an uncomfortable smell. This entranced Gilden and as he watched them, he felt something in his heart move. He wanted to do what they were doing.

At first he was too weak to do anything but watch. Because he’d been wandering around the Scarred Wasteland for so long he’d gone without food and drink. His unexpected swim the the Currents had drained his strength and given a few minor cuts that would need to heal before doing anything strenuous. The clan cared for him though, constantly ensuring that he had everything that he needed and more. His energy soon returned and his strength grew quickly. Once he was ready, his caretaker led him to an area where storms often occurred and the two took to the air. The storm that day was not rough or dangerous and the few lightning bolts that appeared did not touch the ground, but Gilden didn’t care. He felt as if he had been reborn. The plaguelands and been the place of his birth but they were not his home. Here, among the clouds and lightning, he was home.

Gilden grew quickly as if lightning itself rested in his soul. While he never tired of flying in the storms with his new clan, his attention was drawn towards other things. The clan that he was now a part of were very focused on technology and how it could be used to benefit dragons. They used lightning to bring their experiments to life, studying them as they did so, ensuring that whatever happened dragons would not be harmed by the experienced. The imperial had been blessed with an inventive mind and soon joined his clan mates in their experiments. His own inventions were automatons, a creature of metal and energy that could combat enemies instead of dragons fighting them off. Memories of his childhood trauma still filtered through his mind and he wished for no other dragon, hatchling or not, to experience that.

He worked quickly, effectively, and soon had a model with which he could work. He carefully crafted each piece himself, focusing so completely on his work that he was not even aware when day grew to night and back again. After weeks of work, the experiment was ready. Because of how important the automaton was, the entire clan attended its first test. Gilden was simply testing to see if it would even turn on and move and so had not prepared for what came next. The energy he’d placed inside of the metal framework was too great and caused the object to explode. Sheets of metal and wires shot out like bullets. Most were far enough away that they only received minor wounds. But Gilden had been standing right next to it.

For the second time in his life, the imperial was unconscious for a long period of time, the clans healers working around the clock to revive him. The dragon that had first brought him to the clan had become like a father to him and now he paced, worrying for the safety of his son. When Gilden finally woke up, he was no longer the same dragon. Nothing had changed in his mind or heart, he still yearned to make an automaton that could defend clans of dragons. Physically, however, he a change was evident. Many of the female dragons in the clan had found him quite handsome before his accident. He had never been interested in finding a mate though, but this only seemed to make him more attractive. That had all changed now.

Scars now covered the young dragons face, deep cuts that had been healed to the best of the clan healers abilities. They had been too deep and too large for them to do anything other than treat the wounds. Gilden’s face may have received the worst of it, but wounds littered his body. Scars covered his forelegs, back, and underbelly. They were harsh and still raw, sore to the touch and caused Gilden much pain when he moved. Along with the scars, his organs had been damaged when the energy had struck him. The healers had hooked him up to the experiment of another dragon, one that would make it easier for him to live. To help hide the machinery, they gave him a cloak to wear over it all. Gilden felt as if he were a hatchling again, too weak to do anything but watch as life continued on without him. It was weeks before his body had fully healed, but it was months more before he left his cave. The embarrassment he felt at failing his experiment was too great.

So the dragon began working on smaller things, simple toys for the hatchlings. Nothing that would ever chance blowing up in his face again. His father, saddened by his son’s behavior, suggested that he leave the clan for a while to find himself. Many other dragons had done that after a failed experiment, leaving and traveling the world only to return with an energized heart and mind, eager to return to their experiments. Figuring that anything was better than the life he'd been living since the accident, Gilden left his clan and journeyed to all parts of Sornieth. He visited the icy south where he saw how the ice clans lived; the arcane dragons had their magic to fuel their needs, bending it to their will only when necessary; nature clans used magic to heal wounds and though they offered to heal his many scars, the dragon refused. They were a part of him, a reminder that no matter how carefully you planned, accidents could always happen.

It wasn’t until he explored the Sea of a Thousand Currents that he felt he could return home. The cresting waves in the sea had given him the idea to use hydropower instead of electric. Water could not scar someone and it was closer to what he needed anyway. Once returning to his lightning clan, Gilden worked with his father to change his automaton designs and make them seaworthy. Once finished, he said goodbye to his clan and left to find a clan in the currents that would allow him to work on his inventions there. It didn’t take long to find one. It was a clan who strived to protect those who could not do it themselves, a clan of dragons who cared not for physical appearance, only that you could carry yourself in a battle. They gladly accepted Gilden and his experiments, and that is how he came to join the Clan of Clear Water.
