Prince headcannon idea came from lepidracoptera on tumblr. (Used with permission)
It was cold, and dark. The four hatchlings huddling together for warmth and comfort had never known any different. They were only hours old, and had hatched in this place. A cold, stone lined pit that they couldn't climb their way out of. Their wings still wet and clumsy from their eggs. They cried incessantly for their mothers, but got no roar or comforting growls in return. The confused, scared hatchlings were alone... They took comfort in one another, curling up against one another, unsure of what to do.

They weren't related, each egg had been a single one stolen from a nest and carefully incubated by a talonrok caretaker, but that is where the hospitality ended. The snatchlings where left down there alone for days, their cries for their mothers, from fear and hunger gradually grew weaker as the days went on. Finally when it was deemed "safe" by their caretaker to enter the pit, the feathered beastman descended and appraised the condition of the imperials still in their terrified pile. One by one they were ripped from one another, their bodies examined and checked for defects. Deformities made for a weak sentry after all.

The talonrok seemed pleased by the hatchlings, and so he dispatched them swiftly, the imperials watching on in horror as their new siblings were put down one by one. A small red and gold male was the last, shaking and sobbing against the wall from what he had just witnessed, curling himself up in fear, as if that could protect him. A quick jerk on his mane, a flash of pain, and the little red only knew darkness.

The talonrok left the tiny bodies down in the pit, where they would eventually fuse and become one terrifying being. Full grown emperors where an terror to the world, huge monstrous creatures that could wipe an army without a second thought. If they were created from the tiny imperial hatchlings however.. they were much more manageable. More than enough to keep rival beast clans away and certainly enough to keep some encroaching dragons away as well. Just the sight of even a small emperor terrified them all. So this clan kept them as guards. Carefully chained along the borders of their towns. The vocal cords of each hatchling were cut after death so their cries wouldn't become too bothersome. The talonrok could sleep peacefully with their hatchling abominations scaring everything off.

Bound to one of these posts is where the little red awoke. His mind foggy, limbs aching and slow. He felt his "brother and sisters" waking up similarly. All of them groggy and afraid but still really not all there. He was comforted knowing they were close though, and he unfurled his wings clumsily, the three pairs stretching awkwardly. He carefully heaved himself up on to his eight legs. They were overcome then by an unbearable sadness and fear, none of the four snatchlings knew where they were. His sisters were angry and cried out in rage their voices ragged nearly silent despite their attempted roar. His brother quietly sobbed, afraid, wanting his mother. The red soon joined his cries in their sorrow.

Their surroundings were silent, every living creature nearby had fled the moment they had started to stir. Likely for the best, those cries of anguish eventually became ones of insatiable hunger. All four of the small imperials were consumed by it, tearing and lashing at their chains, but to no avail. They were trapped, with no way to sate their hunger.

For months they stayed like that, chained to their little outpost. In brief moments of clarity, the little red got to know his "siblings". None of them had names, but he began to know their minds even as they began to break down. One sister was sullen and spiteful, the other determined and angry, wanting to burn and lash out at everything that dared come near. Sometimes even one of them. His brother was sorrowful and still often cried for his mother. The red could feel their minds slowing as time went on, they became more simplistic faster while his mind, not entirely untouched held up better. Six months into their "deployment" and the red could no longer hear the angry sister. Which upset the three remaining greatly. They still had her wings but her head hung limply. The red nosed her incessantly, not comprehending what was going on. Surely she was asleep? She never awoke. The three would still check every morning for her to try and wake her, for months, until the second sister no longer responded either. This caused more confusion and cries sorrow but the sisters never stirred.

It was the night the second sister had fallen silent, the brothers didn't know what happened, but they heard screams, and saw massive streaks of flames light up the night sky. That insatiable hunger boiled up once again, the smell and blood and fire exciting their simple minds. An explosion shook the mountain side, and the post the tiny emperor was tied to broke from the ground freeing them. Freedom! Excitement lit up the brother's minds as they clambered their way to the battle and exacted their revenge, sating their hunger on what ever talonrok they could find. Dragons flew in the battle above, but they paid no mind to the huge creatures. They happily finished off the wounded on the ground.

The brothers ate their fill, and shambled off to the forest, their hunger sated for now, they wanted to leave this place. The red's brother still longed to find his mother, so they could look he thought. They were never sure how long they looked. It could of been days, or years, but their body slowly began to deteriorate. His brother managed to keep somewhat aware, although his sisters never responded. Eventually they completely lost them, and a wing, the rest of which were torn, weakly hanging at their sides. 6 1/2 limbs remained and three mostly whole tails made up what was left of the little emperor. The reds body was getting slower and neither of the brother's knew why. sating their terrible hunger became more and more difficult, often having to scavenge on what they could find, which was never enough.

It was a rare occasion that they had "filled" their bellies that they had their first encounter with another dragon. A black and white spotted skydancer, her wings the color of the setting sun. She nearly fled as any sane dragon would do spotting the pathetic creature, but she stopped herself. the emperor had frozen staring at her, the black head of the two crying out sorrowfully. The red seeming to regard her curiously instead. The skydancer knew /exactly/ what this tiny abomination was, it was a common fear amongst her clan with the sheer amount of imperials that resided there. She couldn't bring herself to leave him there though... this was a baby emperor, they looked like hatchlings, and it broke her heart. Against her better judgement she crept closer counting the limbs and the parts and pieces, figuring this child was at one point, made of four hatchlings. she had no idea where they other heads were though.

The red regarded her curiously, stretching his thin neck and sniffing, determining that likely this wasn't food. The dragon could be, but he didn't feel the need to attack her. His brother pulled forward in excitement. "Mother!" He heard echoed in his head, the black was desperate enough to latch onto the first female dragon they had found.

Aesop froze in fear as the two headed dragon shambled up to her almost excitedly, unsure if this tiny terror meant to kill her or not, but her fear was for naught, at least for now. The black nuzzled her foreleg and the red who made up the base of the creature investigated some of her feathers. He was happy that his brother was happy, and he liked how this dragon smelled, like flowers and sweet things. The skydancer slowly began to relax, the black raising his head to look up at her.

"Moothheerrr?" He rasped drooling a little, words foreign to his tongue. The red chimed in with the same question. They where gross little undead abominations... but she felt bad for them.

"No.... but I'll take care of you two..." Aesop carefully wrapped her wings around the pitiful creature, relaxing a bit more when they didn't lash out at her. To her surprise she felt the tiny bony form press up against her seeming to want the comfort. That was it. Her mind was made up. She would take them back to the lair and help these two. There were plenty of clerics, even some who dabbled in darker things, surely one of them could help the poor child.

It was several days trip back the the lair, and the tiny prince, as she had begun to call him, followed her willingly. When they became hungry was the closest she was to being attacked, but a quick hunt and a good feeding calmed them right back down. She brought them in at the dead of night, the lair wasn't heavily guarded and the tunnels were so large to make way for the giants of the lair, that the three of them went by unnoticed. Keeping the prince nearby was easy enough, they stuck to her like glue she nearly tripped over them a few times as they made their way to the deepest part of the lair to one of the cleric's chambers. She was taking a huge risk here she knew. Taking an emperor no matter how small to the lair of one of the Wild's Aegis. But she knew Sikke well enough. She thought of all of the clerics, no matter how kind hearted... he'd be the one that would be willing and able to help.

Sikke answered her summons and quickly ushered her in before realizing what exactly she had concealed. His massive 100' form nearly leapt away from the creature 1/10th his size. It took a lot of convincing on the skydancer's part, the imperial had wanted to simply put the child down as he leaned against her flank nuzzling her. She eventually appealed to Sikke's darker curiosities. What if an emperor could stabilize? Regain some form of consciousness? And how little the clan knew of such beasts when it was seen as such a threat. Surely helping the little prince could help the clan as a whole? And if he failed, the prince was small enough to be easily disposed of.

Sikke went with it against his better judgement, he couldn't deny the rare opportunity he had been given. After some studying and another heavy feeding to the prince to keep them calm, Sikke began his magic. It was grueling work and it took several days, but he managed to stop the decay of the prince's minds. Then he slowly began to repair their body. He couldn't replace lost limbs of course but he made whole what skin and flesh he could. He couldn't stop the dead looking eyes, the constant drooling, or help their voices, but he was amazed at what he did accomplish. They looked alive enough, they could nearly pass for a normal if somewhat maimed hatchling. Except for the second head... and extra limbs. Now keeping the prince's sanity in check was much more difficult.

It took good bit of hush hush collaborating from some of Sikke's contacts outside of the lair, and some help from Eurys' enchanting abilities, but the cleric crafted what he thought would be able to keep the tiny abominations more murderous tendencies in check. Two small gold stones, enchanted heavily with magic, created to keep the princes calm even when "hungry". The cleric began his spell and carefully embedded the stones into each hatchling's forehead. The effect seemed immediate and successful.

The red tilted his head curiously at this giant imperial he had become familiar with. He had felt no pain when the stone was implanted, that seemed above his capabilities, but he did feel calmer, his mind quieter. His brother shared the same revelation, and the two nosed each other playfully, feeling some kind of contentment for the first time in their lives.

Sikke and Aesop watched the princling carefully and hopefully, in order to truly test if the stones had worked.. the hatchlings would have to get hungry again. So they waited as the prince shambled around exploring everything with a new consideration to their surroundings, they still weren't all there.. but it was something. The prince froze after awhile and the black looked to the red, the red returning the look and after what seemed to be some "deliberation" amongst themselves, they shambled over to Aesop and Sikke.

"Aesoooo." The red rasped, almost in a whine, swaying back and forth a bit.

"Hungry." Added the black, as they sat and waited, somewhat patiently begging, almost like normal hatchlings.

Aesop nearly cried with joy and quickly fed them, Sikke watched and nodded approvingly and took some notes down.

"I can't believe you did it.. this is huge!" Aesop watched, sheer joy filling her chest as princeling ate, mostly peacefully, there was a brief squabble between the heads when they wanted the same fish, but that was resolved easily enough when it tore in half.

"...We'll likely have to repeat the process eventually but for now... we'll see how it holds. This wouldn't of worked had they been any larger or the magic stronger."Sikke shook his head, impressed with himself, but cautious in his optimism. "He's going to be a hard sell with the patriarch and the captains. And if they regress at all and attack someone..." He trailed off.

"I know..."The skydancer said, trying not let that not so subtle hint keep her down. "I'll keep them safe..." She nodded to herself, determined.

"You've always been fond of such strange things..." Sikke sighed, shaking his great mane in thought. "If they're staying then what will you name them?"

"The Red will be Ahm, The black will be Mahr." The skydancer shifted and refolded her wings carefully approaching the prince who simply looked up at her and continued eating.

"Summer's song hmm?" Sikke shook his head again rubbing his temple. "A pretty name doesn't match such a creature.. but alright... I'll speak with the captains then." The cleric stretched his great form and he lumbered out of the chamber, leaving the skydancer to her new charges.
