When Italn came to the Caravan so long ago as a young imperial with his twin brother Ilnta he had a strange disease that made him not quite as alive as one would hope. Italn and his brother were born with one soul for two bodies and it left the brothers hollow. Not dead, but barely living. Ilnta was the most alive. The one who seemed to be normal enough to ‘fix’. But no one could fix him. Even though his mate tried before even she eventually gave up and left him and tried and tried until she came to a thousand dead ends. There was nothing she could do for Ilnta short of some sort of trickery and power that would strip Italn of his half of their soul which was, of course, impossible. So Italn went through life as a half alive thing. Not dead enough to become an Emperor but terrifying all the same. He did not eat, did not sleep, and hardly seemed to breathe. He barely ever spoke except to his brother and when he did he did so in a whisper. His memories of that time are muted and distant at best when he thinks about that time when he was that hollow shell of a dragon. His most recent ability to remember came when he fell asleep somewhere in the Windsinger’s Tale. It had been the first time he’d ever slept in his life. A swarm of locusts in the shape of light visited him in his dreams and said in a buzzing voice that they could fix what was deeply damaged with him. Their words were honey and riddle and when Italn awoke from months of unending sleep he left the Tale and swam out to the Slaughter Three. There he met the unformed Gaze known as Shar Ko; the Tongue. It was a putrid thing that showed Italn to Killing and she, with her gentle heart, separated his half soul from his body so Ilnta could have it. That left Italn without a soul of his own and he stayed in the Slaughter Three for many weeks before Killing infused a new soul into his mostly lifeless, corpse, of a body that healed his flesh and graced his mind with higher thought even changing his very appearance and colors. That was the first day Italn lived, and the first thing he truly remembered. Killing asked for no repayment and Italn returned to the Windsinger’s Tale in confusion, not knowing who he was except his name and that he had a brother. A twin brother. When he found Ilnta he was shocked, and horrified by what he saw. His brother had their whole soul but after being separated for so long it was not clean and festered with rot and decay of death. Ilnta had been given their soul, but he was no more alive than he had been. Now Italn was the one who had to look after his brother as Ilnta had looked after him for so many years. He swore to himself that he’d fix Ilnta as he had been fixed. He thought perhaps he could do it himself so Italn took up the study of magic. He sought instruction under the guidance of the progenitor Ars and was surprised that he was actually pretty good at it. But try as he might he couldn’t do what Killing had done. When he spoke of it to Ars the progenitor said that such magic was not something he’d ever attempt and had nothing for Italn to further his goal. Driven to desperation Italn sought out the thing that had first brokered his own change, the unborn Gaze, to try and get them to make Killing to fix Ilnta too. Perhaps that had always been the plan. The first hit is always free but now that Italn was in the position to pay for what could be done the Tongue would make him pay. Payment would be Butcher’s death. How they would do that Italn had no idea and the Tongue told them to find the Deep nested in the depths of the lagoon for help. So he searched for the Deep, whatever that was, and found the Leviathan. As a fully realized creation of a God the Leviathan could not get so close to the Slaughter Three without risking being corrupted itself but it needed to get a thing called a Deep Star to the Slaughter Three. Supposedly to give to Killing that would bring about the death of Butcher who was a fickle wrinkle in the fabric of time the Tidelord had sent the Leviathan to iron out. So Italn took the Deep Star and brought it to the Tongue to give to Killing. The Tongue would but that would not be all that needed to be done to see about the destruction of the lich. Killing would never just raise her claw against her uncle without good reason. She had to be given a reason. Unlike others Ilnta could not be corrupted by the dark magic surrounding the Slaughter Three. So Italn had him remain near the ship to watch for weaknesses. Ilnta found those weaknesses in the form of Killing having a secret love affair with male dragon that involved a child. Italn knew enough to know that that knowledge would make Butcher very angry. So he coordinated a way for Butcher to see his niece’s disobedience and sat back to see what would happen. It was more gruesome than Italn anticipated. The mad doctor Butcher wounded Killing in every way except physically, creating a thing so vile and dark that not even the shadows wanted to touch it for it was so against the natural order of things. But something happened. Italn didn’t know, he wasn’t there. All he knew was that from the northern part of the lagoon there was a great light, as blinding as the sun. He and Ilnta only approached in the aftermath and found that Butcher had been slain and the darkness that clung to the Slaughter Three and to Killing had been banished by the Lightweaver’s Gaze. As promised Ilnta was restored to a perfect state, his soul healed by the power of the Gaze. After the passing of the Gaze the Slaughter Three was without and Killing was alone in her grief and heartbreak that everything she had ever loved had been destroyed or killed. Feeling partially responsible for it Italn offered himself to Killing for whatever she would need, along with his brother. And so Italn became a death guard against the essence of Butcher’s soul Killing had trapped inside his own lifeless skull. Italn keeps it safe now, and close, guarding the lich’s soul from those who might want to bring him back to life. And for the demon worm that had so corrupted him Killing bound it to a mantle that demanded it always be watched. Italn took that charge gladly as his magical abilities granted him the power to be nearly all seeing. Since that time Italn and his brother have rarely left the Slaughter Three in a self made penance to be there for Killing as she grieved and cared for the un-thing that Butcher had made in his mad rage. Italn has even learned to tune out the sobbing it makes. |
