Halvard knows the ins and outs of the clan's winding tunnels, the entrance to which lies at the base of an old tree. His memory is quite exceptional, and he knows of chambers and underground paths that other dragons have long forgotten. He knows which tunnels are collapsed, which loop back on themselves, where the library and stockpiles of food are, and much more.
He found a friend in Servaas, a construction manager for the clan's lair and the only other dragon who comes close to Halvard's knowledge of the lair beneath the great tree. His other companion, beyond his mate, Anthea, is Frost, the harried librarian Ridgeback. If anyone understands having an obstinate Snapper of a mate with a bit of a green thumb who's constantly trying to drag you aboveground, it's Halvard and Frost.
Despite that, he dotes on Anthea, who picks her way down into the lair each night smelling of turned earth and the sun-warmed greenery of the plants she looks after. They met as migratory adolescents and have been together ever since.
