Chimera grew up on stories. As a hatchling, he would curl up under one of his mother’s feathered wings and plead that she tell him a tale. He fell asleep listening to Carmen’s voice as she told him about demons and faeries and a menagerie of other ‘mythical’ creatures. Then, he would dream. Chimera’s mind pieced the stories together into dreams so elaborate and vivid that they almost seemed real.

When Carmen told longer stories, she would often stop part way through, promising to continue them the next evening. Sometimes, however, she found that Chimera would already know more of the story than she had told. “So, what was on the note?!” Chimera asked excitedly one evening as he snuggled amongst Carmen’s downy feathers, his eyes bright as he awaited the next chapter in the tale. Carmen raised an eyebrow, “who told you there was a note? I only said that the golden dragon had vanished”. Chimera smiled, “maybe I dreamed it. . . but there was a note, right?”

Over time, Chimera realized that he didn’t just dream about stories, but any information he heard. If he thought about something while falling asleep, he would experience the event for himself in his dreams and he would often know more about it when he woke up than he did the previous evening. Some dragons in the Clan of Nowhere looked at Chimera with suspicion. There were already uncertain whispers about him and Carmen ever since the pair showed up in the clan’s territories and now the hatchling kept acquiring information that he shouldn’t have known.

“I think your hatchling is snooping around, Carmen” Arcanis said sternly one day. The Skydancer looked at her quizzically, “and why do you think that?” Arcanis let out an annoyed sigh, “well, I’m not sure how else he could have found out that I’m missing an eye! Plus he knows ab-“

“Woah! You’re missing an eye?!” Carmen gasped excitedly before snapping her mouth shut. “Sorry. . .”

The Wildclaw grumbled in response. “Just. . . can you watch him a little more closely? Some dragons prefer to have their secrets kept secret."

There was one dragon in the Clan of Nowhere who took particular interest in Chimera’s abilities. The scholar met Chimera when he caught the curious hatchling eyeing his books one day. “What are these?” Chimera questioned and was met with a low chuckle from Baelius. “They’re books, pages that contain tales, histories, knowledge. You can write a book about anything really!”

“Stories?!” Chimera said with excitement before pulling a book off the shelf and opening it only to see scrawling black marks on the page. “Where’s the story?” he asked with disappointment and Baelius could only laugh. “It’s right in front of you, you have to read it”.

Baelius taught the young Skydancer to read and Chimera visited him often to borrow books and discuss their content. Of course, Chimera would also seem to know more about many of the stories than what was written. “Why didn’t the author finish this incantation?” the hatchling questioned one day.

“Some things just get lost to time” Baelius replied sadly. There were many incomplete spells and histories, after all.

“Right but. . .” Chimera scrawled a few extra symbols onto the page before reciting the incantation.

The pair emerged from Baelius’ study several moments later coughing and smelling strongly of smoke. “See! It worked!” Baelius smiled at the hatchling. “Indeed! But next time, let’s not summon a fire sprite inside”.

No one could ever explain how Chimera’s dreams worked to reveal snippets of lost information to the Skydancer, but the ability certainly made him an amazing scholar. He could retrieve information about spells or lost items and many dragons sought him out if they had misplaced or forgotten something.

The dragons of the Clan of Nowhere still remain suspicious of Chimera, but he’s learned to keep his mouth shut when he finds out a secret about his clan mates. After all, there are more interesting secrets to be pried from books.
