Jude inspected the tiny mushroom near the edge of the cavern pool he was bathing in. "Glowing again today, I see." He wondered if the water was causing the change since none of the mushrooms further back along the cave wall were glowing. "Maybe one day I'll start to glow too." He laughed at the thought and proceeded to finish bathing.

The Lucent Caverns' flora always interested Jude, but it was crystal song phenomenon that fascinated him the most. Some dragons had become so bedazzled by the crystals that they believed they were singing. This 'crystal song' was thought to be the first signs of exhaustion. If caught early, those affected could rest in the crystalless cavern for a few nights and be perfectly fine. Total darkness scared some though, and they'd hide their symptoms until it developed into a form of dementia. The mood swings and memory loss were always followed by an attempt to travel deeper into the caverns where even the patrols don't go. Those who were found by patrols said it was in order to hear the song better.

Jude's father was one of the lead investigators into crystal song. He'd go out with the patrols whenever someone went missing and would take samples of the crystals in the area. Jude once asked to see the samples, but his father became furious and yelled at him to get out. It was the first time Jude had ever heard him raise his voice.

"Hey Jude, could you tell Jarith to get ready for a patrol? Got another one missing; third this week."

Jude looked up in surprise. While thinking about his father, his feet had taken him close to his father's living area. "I will." He continued on a little ways and took a right turn. "Father? You're wanted on patrol." Jude waited outside for a response, but none came. He stepped into the small side cavern, dimly lit by only a couple crystals.

"What's going on?" Jude was use to seeing research notes scatter about and half eaten meals on a good day, but the tidy room room was empty.

"You must be Jude; Jarith said you would come."

Jude didn't recognize the feminine voice, already one impossibility, and he still appeared to be alone in the room. Crystal chameleons were able to hide by blending in to the surroundings; he wondered if his father was experimenting with them. Jude extended his arm and swiped in the direction he heard the voice, meeting no resistance. "Where are you?"

"We don't have time. Follow my footsteps and keep up."

According to the sounds, she walked right through him. Jude smacked his tail into the doorway and the pain convinced him he was awake enough. He hurried to catch up to the already faint footfalls.


Deep into the caverns they traveled - far deeper than Jude had ever been. The large crystalline formations were beginning to affect the sounds he heard, echoing his own footsteps back to him. Just when he began to question the sanity of it all, he heard a faint wordless melody. Hauntingly beautiful, he wondered if this was the infamous crystal song.

Soon the song stopped. He turned into a side passage and saw a large blood red crystal. Awe only lasted a moment as he moved closer to inspect it; the 'large' crystal was actually made up of numerous shards. "These look like the shards father was collecting."

"They are."

He looked up at the male voice and saw an imperial's reflection in the crystal, but not his own. Resisting the urge to turn around, he asked, "Why did you bring me here?"

"To free you from that crystalline cage and bring you home."

"Father?" The image was distorted from all the edges of the shards, but the voice was so close that there's no one else it could be. "What do you..."

There was a bright flash causing Jude to shield his eyes with his forearm, except his arm was beginning to disappear.
