He loved the Wasteland, you know. He probably still does. It was his birthplace, after all, and he is a plague dragon and a mirror and both of those things lend themselves well to a longing for the wastes. Do you think he misses the seemingly endless plains of the boneyard? Do you think he misses the pulsing warmth of the contagion? Do you think his heart still longs to make a pilgrimage towards the Wyrmwound, to see himself in its abiding waters? It takes a special kind of breed to live in the Wastes. It takes even more, to then make that dragon who has been born and raised and nurtured in the plaguelands, whose every tendon sings to run the plains, whose magic takes to the wastelands like a moth to a flame and whose body was first designed to find, to catch, to hunt—it takes so much to make that dragon leave. One sister died to famine. His other withdrew into herself, seeking magic and the mists and things that might not even be there to fill the hole she left. His mother grew harsher and his father—well. It's hard to know what his father thought of the whole thing, monster as he is. Do you think he loved his family, too? A bygone question; of course he did. Probably, he still does. But there was pain there, so much pain, and he simply could not take it anymore. He has not been seen in the Wasteland for years. Certainly, he has never laid eyes on the Oasis which his mother's pack inspired. (Would he be proud to see how it sprawls? Or would the reminders held within simply bring more pain?) But, elsewhere, there are so many beautiful sights to see. The jewels of Earth, the spiraling clouds of Wind, the glittering stars of Arcane—even, perhaps, the viridescent colors of Nature. He'll drink up those sights, you see, always wandering, always searching for the next big thing, the next big adventure. Always traveling; always. Perhaps he thinks that enough of the glories of the world will make his own pain fade. |
