the abyss staring back

They’d been sinking for what felt like hours now. Monk and Ligeia switched off pulling air to breathe from the distant surface and the waters around them as they descended. The Leviathan Trench, the deepest-known place of the world, just kept falling, falling, falling.

Monk and Ligeia had been to the sea floor before, though that several thousand meters above them. They stood on the shelf, looking out at the undersea horizon where a pair of Deeps Leviathan swam together in an infinite corkscrew. The monsters they sought this time were deeper, darker.

“There it is; do you see it?” Ligiea pointed beneath them, an orange spark spreading a fire beneath them.

Monk leaned to one side, his feet swinging lazily from suspension in their air bubble. “Now that’s really interesting…”

Ligiea smiled faintly, though she wondered if this would be the time her nerves got the better of her. She was magically competent, perhaps even expert. But their quest to find this roiling mass of monster and magma could come to a messy end much more quickly than she imagined. She and Monk had only seen the creature once, but it was enough of a glance to cause the search of a lifetime.

A hulking creature, deep blue of the abyss that surrounded it━until it awoke. Its blood pulsed golden-hot, putting a glow under the scales and veins ran with magma. Eyes, when they were open, glowed. Magma billowed and bubbled beneath them.

Monk squinted. “Is that…?”

As if on a cue, a screech shook the waters around them. The bubble vibrated, the mournful wail reaching them as an echo. The monster was close, and she knew they were there.

Monsters have long been known to lurk the deepest and darkest depths of Sornieth’s seas. Though monsters like Euros are not as dangerous as an Emperor, but they are terrifying to behold and destructive to their surroundings. Indeed, undersea clans dread creatures like Euros. There is no malice in a monster like Euros, and somehow that seems more terrifying.

The Tempest Chase was hired by a clan under the Sea to help them with their pest problem. Unfortunately, the pest was a big larger than they bargained for. The youngest and newest members of the Chase were anxious to whet their claws on something big and impressive. It may not have been all of their first time out, but it was going to be their true first impression. They were going to take down a monster, and it was going to be big.

The monster, as was her custom, went past the undersea clan, her fins and glowing claws raked the ground, drawing magma and destroying the landscape. Every dragon channeled their abilities for the fight. Wind dragons provided oxygen for the non-Water dragons. The strong sharpened their claws and the magical practiced their meditations.

Things didn’t go exactly as planned. The monster retreated to the deep, though the Tempest Chase managed to emerge mostly unscathed. Cruor did have his claws a bit full on the field, and Medic shortly after, but no dragons were lost in the battle. The youngest dragons, though some were injured, weren’t put off their enthusiasm and some vowed to return as soon as they were well. Since the threat was gone, the Tempest Chase moved on, but the young dragons knew they would be back.

A small band of kids returned later, but didn’t see the monster they met up close. They continued to return every now and again, but it appeared the monster had retreated to the deepest depths. Without the rest of the Chase, the small band of still-learning hunters was unable to continue to hunt. All the same, a few of the dragons continued to train and dreamed of returning, honing their skills to finish the job they started.

There is no evidence suggesting that Euros is sapient; however, she does have a symbiotic relationship with many sea creatures. Entire schools of clow hippocampi live in the clefts of her enormous scales and paddle about in the current created by her enormous wing-like fins. She keeps even the deepest waters warm for them, and they, in return, clean her scales and attract larger prey animals as prey for her. It was from this union dragons have discovered clown hippocampi are capable of withstanding the greater pressure of the deepest ocean.

strengths: is impervious to severe heat and cold, thick scales and a strong frame make her resistant to high pressure
weaknesses: slow-moving with wide turning radius━but Euros will suffocate if she is forced to remain still
