To be recognized as one of the Arcanist's scholars, you have to be smart. You have to be skilled. But most of all, you have to be unique. In the Starfell Isles, every self-respecting dragon knows that their life's work is to work towards being admitted into the Observatory. Being one of the Arcanist's best is the highest calling an arcanic dragon aim for. Mesmer was born in a clan of scientists, in the Crystalspine, close enough to the Wasteland that he could smell the rot in the breeze, and he could see the red in both his parent's eyes. So he grew up playing with gently radioactive rocks and breathing in that lovely fresh-corpse smell. Thinking back on it, it wasn't that big of a surprise that he turned out the way he did. He was a sweet child, always freeing the lab animals and being able to speak at the most mutated members of the clan without looking at them funny. And he was naturally curious, he wanted to study and he wanted to get his way into the Observatory. Mesmer's mother studied the unique magics that was found in that particular region. The lesser magics, those that could be learned and not born into. He tried all the magics that could be tried. Cloud magic, metal, venom, and blood - he tried them all, without avail. It pained the clan to see such an eager student fail so badly, each time his hopes of getting into the Observatory falling a little more every time. Those four magics were the easiest to train into, and he couldn't do any of them. His mist clouds evaporated in the sun, he was useless at smithing, and he couldn't make blood so much as leap. Soon, his colleagues began to speak of his place in the clan. His kindness would not earn them academic laurels. His failures would not get them money to pay for his food. |

I feared that he'd be too interested in his own studies to genuinely care for the clan's dragons. Now that he's settled in, I think I am fond of the fellow.
