Corruption on his claws. Long gone, but the stench remains impregnated eternally within them. Memories dance behind him, bloodshed and tears. Once more, carnage trails after him.

The sun warms him though, coating him evenly in celestial forgiveness and he pushes past them. He steps into the present, unyielding. Laughter rings around him, his ears twitching with crackling energy.

As he walks, smiles greet him, kind and genuine. Such a contrast from the absolute darkness if he were to look back. He might even feel it for himself one day, true, unadulterated happiness. For now, he is plentifully satisfied with what he has found.

He advances, takes another step forward, carrying his love with him. She trails behind, so unwilling to let go.

He refuses to acknowledge it, but he carries a single fear with him. That she would be the one to hold him back.

The sins of a past life can weigh heavy on the shoulders of those not ready to carry them.

They materialize in funny ways. Appear when you least expect them.

Azazel was no stranger to this concept.

His talons echoed on the bare floor of the castle as he walked through, his gaze distant. Light shone through the window, illuminating the swirls of dust in the air as they floated by.

Roses filled the halls of the castle that he lived in.

A splash of colour to contrast the darkness that lurked around every corner.

A splash of colour to match the blood that stained his talons a dark maroon.

The sins of a life he was beginning to forget still gnawed away at his mind, never letting him rest.

So he worked tirelessly to atone.

His talons were covered in ink and dirt, his mane matted and messy. His eyes grew tired and tried to sleep but he fought them.

He had so much left to make up for.

Gentle gold filled his tired eyes and he blinked away the daze, his echoing footsteps falling silent as he gazed at his lover.

She stood in front of him, her head tilted as she looked over him before gently motioning to follow as she turned, heading back towards the main entrance of the castle.

He followed, letting his tired talons guide him as he gazed around the walls.

Cracks caught his eye, the spidery fractures inching down the walls slowly but surely. They stood out against the pristine paint and Azazel wondered how long they had been there.

Simply a visual sign of his failures.

He felt his magic faltering. He knew he was growing weaker and that this castle he had created would crumble.

He only hoped that Eclipse would find her way to the only other dragons she could trust here.

Ahead of him, Eclipse had turned as if sensing his traitorous thoughts and he moved forward, falling into stride beside her as she moved.

She was all things good.

The feeling of sunlight on scales, warming and comforting. The sounds of life rustling through open meadows. The stars that scattered across night skies.

He was shadows that hissed where they touched the light. The stench of death and decay. Clouds as they shifted across the night sky.

Maybe it was strange to see them together.

So different and yet, she knew the sins of their past as they weighed on her shoulders just as heavily. Only she had learned how to push through, to find joy in the new life they had been offered, the second chance.

She had seen the opportunity and she had seized it in the same hungry talons that had once seized power from anyone who stood in her way.

There was blood staining her talons too, but somehow, the red looked much more beautiful on her.

Lore Continued

Azazel paused, realizing that Eclipse had already stopped and he followed her gaze.

She had brought him to a small area hidden away from the castle and any other signs of population. Azazel knew where they were.

He remembered the weeks he had spent tirelessly clearing out the small circle, ripping brambles out and fighting to keep them away. He remembered the single rose he had planted here.

He still didn’t know exactly why he had felt the need to do it.

Now, where the clearing had once been empty, roses sprouted from the ground in bursts of colour. They followed the circle, leaving a clearing in the middle as they reached into the sky, fighting away the shadows as they reached for the light.

Eclipse padded into the clearing and glanced up at the smallest ray of sunlight forcing its way through.

“Beautiful isn't it?”

Her voice was soft.
Azazel watched fondly from the shadows where he stood.

Red always had looked better on her.

Extra

They say the past is the past.
You should live and forget.
But how is that ever supposed to last?

I live with regret.
My hands responsible for bloodshed.
I hurt many that I met.

I look ahead.
Help those in need.
As my dark memories in my heart embed.

I ask myself, will I ever be freed?
Could I ever get rid of my past lifes greed?
