The ether.

She was lost, is lost.

Glimpses of glittering jewels and vivid colours entrance her from the corner of her eye. Bringing her attention to it, they dance away, teasing. She only wishes she could catch up.

Nostalgia engulfs her, it has become a state of being, she is on a high of her own making.

In the dead of night, when everything has fallen to sleep, when the only thing in the sky is a splatter of fading dots, she becomes herself again, wrapped in a cloak. She is as dark as the twilight above her head. She slips out, weapon in hand, a bringer of justice, noble, though her title may be gone.

Before fading into her surroundings, she turns her head, ever so slightly, watching her past disintegrate in the form of her lover. Truth hits her with more clarity than it ever has.

She will never be home again.

Grief was an empty feeling.

What did Eclipse grieve for? She couldn’t put a name to it.

Was it the jewelry? The title? Maybe it was the honour.

Or maybe it was just grief for a world lost.

The glittering jewels that were embedded in her memory, the flash of a dagger. She wished for it all back.

The sound of her talons echoing through an empty hallway brought her back to reality.

The dreary walls draped with a few scattered tapestries, the wilting roses on pedestals by a foggy window.

This was not home.

Eclipse continued walking through the echoing halls, her mind wandering.

She had watched as the life of royalty slipped so easily away from her, like water through her talons. She watched as Azazel forced a smile to hide the pain he felt for his past. Eclipse had seen everything, but from a distance.

The wish to stay in her memories was a strong one.

Behind her a small clink made her turn. She watched as Azazel carefully replaced a wilted rose with one recently picked. He offered a smile that she returned, although weary.

He walked closer, offering her a small necklace that he held carefully in his talons.

“ They will return, I promise.” He says, placing the necklace over her head. It belonged to the one dragon Eclipse had bonded with from this time. She had accepted Eclipse for who she was, and although Eclipse could see that she didn’t like the assassin part, she had never said anything against her.

“ I know.” Eclipse replied, turning to stare out the window. Beside her Azazel sat down, reaching a wing out to drape over Eclipse.

“ You’re grieving.”

“ Yes.”

It was a simple acknowledgment. Azazel understood the grief that she felt. Eclipse understood the desire to atone for sins. They understood each other.

She leaned against him, closing her eyes.

“ Do you ever want to return?” She asks, listening to the soft sound of wind outside.

“ In the same way, no.” He replies. She nods her head softly, focusing on his breathing and letting herself fall into a peaceful sleep.

Poem by MoonSun18

What is the definition of being homesick?
The pain in your heart?
the memories that flash through your mind quick?

What do I miss? I miss the art.
The quick excitement from the silent killing.
The sweet freedom, like a raspberry tart.

My old home, oh so thrilling.
The thought of being trapped here forever...
It sure gives me a good chilling.

Azazel tells me to not give up, however,
I'm afraid I won't return. Ever.
