 Keme developed a sub-strand of Hanahaki in response to intense, prevalent feelings of guilt and regret that manifested soon after a large, abrupt discharge of his magic accidentally wiped out a previous clan he affiliated himself with. After everything settled, he realized he was both unscathed and the only survivor.

As a result, he suffers from intense, sporadic coughing fits where he coughs up dry sand. It takes a massive toll on his body — scratches up his throat, mouth/ lips, nose, and lungs. Blood never fails to quickly add itself to the mix, and after the sand's passed he's rendered bedridden for at least the rest of that day and following night (or however far he was able to make it before the fit began).

  • (CHEM, as in 'chemistry') Native American (Algonquin) name meaning 'thunder'.
  • Until Nemesis came into his life, he tried to prevent himself from staying in one place for 'too long'.
  • Other than his mate, he's never told anyone the reason for his condition.
  • Fears that either his past will catch up to him, or that it'll repeat itself, so he tries to keep everyone at arm's length. Strictly refers to others as 'acquaintances', and is careful to not be in someone's debt.
    • Nemesis' the only one in a long time that's managed to get past this defense.
  • Paranoid that he'll become a burden, Keme jumps at the chance to be helpful/useful, regardless of the reward/payment. This has gotten him into some tight spots in the past.
  • Has always been emotionally sensitive, and cries often (yet almost never in front of others. If he feels impending tears, he quickly excuses himself).
  • Isn't at risk for developing Opal because his magic's now sporadically drawn out and dispersed via enchantments on his clothing's beads.
  • Has recurrent nightmares of sand occupying other parts of him: his tear ducts (thus cries sand), his blood vessels (thus 'bleeds' sand), etc.
  • Often daydreamed of sharing a content, domestic life with another and not needing to hide his ailment. Has (mostly) achieved that life with Nemesis.
