M O R N I N G S T A R
 FIRST MOTHER OF CANDLEHAVEN Morningstar was hatched into a Coatl clan living among the northern forests of the Sunbeam ruins. They shared territory with a Serthis tribe, but violence between the two groups managed to stay restrained by an unspoken honor among foes, and two extraordinarily adventurous Serthis had even chosen to become dragons' familiars. The forest provided a barrier against the roaming Emperor to the south, and the sunny coast to the north provided a comfortable location for nests. As a custom, the tribe did not return to the Ashfall Wastes to make their nests, and indeed few members of the clan had ever left the relative safety of the woodland coast. One night, at that time of year when many of the clan were starting to lay their eggs, Morningstar was feeling out of sorts. She went to sleep after eating only a few bites of food, even though her clan had found an astonishingly bountiful school of fish that evening, and the rest of the clan had feasted heartily. When she awoke, the forest was on fire. The heavy footfalls of the horror approached. She tried to rouse her sleeping clanmates, to no avail. The poisoned fish had left them sluggish and half-paralyzed. She and one other escaped: a male around her age who she didn't know very well, by the name of Eventide. Morningstar had no eggs of her own (it was only her first breeding season as an adult, and she had not yet taken a mate), but she and Eventide took as many eggs as they could from the now-doomed nests as they fled into the Tangled Wood. They curled around the eggs, that night, and alternated wakefulness to watch over each other. With both of them feeling effects of the poison, the journey was difficult. None of the eggs made it. Morningstar and Eventide didn't quite make it to the Emberglow coast, themselves. Morningstar had become gravid with her first clutch of eggs, and they landed on the plains of the Hearth, where they hastily found a lava-filled niche to serve as a nest. Even before the eggs had hatched, they saw several dragons approaching from the north--Solthi and her clan. They welcomed the companionship, and their clutch of five eggs were the first dragons hatched in the Haven. | texttofilloutspacefillout |
